Abstract

"An esteemed curator's introduction to the history and themes of photographic portraiture that masterfully combines some of the most famous portraits ever made with rarely seen treasures and curiosities. Photographic portraiture has always served a number of functions: from practical identification to storytelling and the intimate personal portrait. With a fresh approach, Face Time explores the many modes of portraiture--from fine art photography to fashion, and from anthropology to cinema--as well as the ways we encounter and interpret a portrait, from the news-hour mugshot to the glossy fashion photograph. Organized into eight thematic chapters, curator and photography historian Phillip Prodger captures more than 150 years of photographic portraiture, including nineteenth-century pioneers Hippolyte Bayard and William Henry Fox Talbot, modernist icons Lee Miller and Aleksander Rodchenko, as well as contemporary groundbreakers Newsha Tavakolian, Rineke Dijkstra, and Zanele Muholi. Prodger takes readers through the key questions of photography and dives into complex explorations of identity, representation, and purpose. Intelligently selected, this introduction to the history of the photographic portrait is comprehensive and groundbreaking in scope. Featuring portraits of great figures such as Queen Elizabeth II, Barack Obama, Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, and Yuri Gagarin, Prodger aligns some of the best-known portraits ever made alongside rarely seen gems to tell the story of one of photography's most popular engagements: us."

Abstract

"From photography's beginnings in the United States, Black studio photographers operated on the developing edge of popular media to produce affirming portraits for their clients, as well as a wide range of photographic work rooted in their communities. Called to the Camera offers a comprehensive history of this work, from the nineteenth-century daguerreotypes of James Presley Ball to the height of Black studios in the mid-twentieth century, and considers contemporary photographers responding to Black studio traditions today. In addition to showcasing famous photographers such as Ball, James Van Der Zee, and Addison Scurlock, this volume brings attention to dozens of other artists across the country, including Florestine Perrault Collins, Austin Hansen, and Henry Clay Anderson. The book features more than one hundred extraordinary vintage photographs, many of them unique objects and some, like those by the Hooks Brothers Studio, published here for the first time. Highlighting Black subjects on both sides of the camera, Called to the Camera presents a broader and more inclusive history of photography."--

Abstract

"In A Nimble Arc Emilie Boone considers James Van Der Zee's photographic work across the twentieth century-from his early years in Harlem to the moment of the Harlem on my Mind exhibit-to foreground aspects of Black quotidian life. Boone theorizes 'nimble' to describe the ease of movement with which one must transition between art history and vernacular photography when considering Van Der Zee and his work. While Van Der Zee is lauded for his role in the Harlem Renaissance and his late-career portrait of Jean-Michel Basquiat, his studio played a major role in the Black community for decades, photographing ordinary people and events in ways that have been mostly overlooked. Boone's account recasts our understanding not only of this canonical figure, but of photography in Black life more generally"--

Abstract

Growing up in a lace-curtain Irish suburb of Boston, secretly trying on his sister's dresses and spending his evenings after school in the city's chicest boutiques, Cunningham dreamed of a life dedicated to fashion. When he arrived in New York in 1948, he reveled in people-watching. He became a photographer for The New York Times, and after two style mavens took Cunningham under their wing he made a name for himself as a designer. Taking on the alias William J.-- because designing under his family's name would have been a disgrace to his parents--he became one of the era's most outlandish and celebrated hat designers, catering to movie stars, heiresses, and artists alike. Written with his infectious joy and one-of-a-kind voice, this memoir was polished, neatly typewritten, and safely stored away until after his death in 2016 -- adapted from jacket.

Abstract

This book is the result of a collaborative project, commissioned to the Lieven Gevaert Research Centre for Photography and Visual Studies at the KULeuven by the Concertgebouw Brugge. Malou Swinnen has portrayed seventeen Mozart performers, right before entering the stage, in two different states. The fascinating relationship between photography and music is addressed in an essay written by Katelijne Schiltz and Hilde Van Gelder. Liesbeth Decan has interviewed Malou Swinnen in depth.
