Pour les historiens, Nicholas Spykman partage ainsi avec Kennan la reputation d'avoir inspire la strategie du containment anticommuniste de la Guerre froide. qui triomphe a partir de 1947. Cette biographie intellectuelle reconstitue l'ensemble de son parcours et analyse l'histoire de la fascination-repulsion qui marqua la reception des theories geopolitiques allemandes aux Etats-Unis, des premisses de la Seconde Guerre mondiale a la naissance du bipolarisme.
