Latin America is one of the most violent regions in the world. It has suffered waves of repressive authoritarian rule, organized armed insurgency and civil war, violent protest, and ballooning rates of criminal violence. But is violence hard wired into Latin America? This is a critical reassessment of the ways in which violence in Latin America is addressed and understood. Previous approaches have relied on structural perspectives, attributing the problem of violence to Latin America's colonial past or its conflictual contemporary politics. Bringing together scholars and practitioners, this volume argues that violence is often rooted more in contingent outcomes than in deeply embedded structures. Addressing topics ranging from the root sources of violence in Haiti to kidnapping in Colombia, from the role of property rights in patterns of violence to the challenges of peacebuilding, The Politics of Violence in Latin America is an essential step towards understanding the causes and contexts of violence--and changing the mechanisms that produce it.

Un état de l'art des recherches théoriques et artistiques mises en place entre la Corée et la France au sujet de la crise de la représentation en politique, en économie, en art et en information. Les contributeurs adoptent trois perspectives d'analyse : les médias, la photographie et le capitalisme. ©Electre 2019 Le problème de la présence oblige à mettre en œuvre la représentation,comme si, pour l’être humain, la présence ne pouvait se suffire à elle-même et devait s’accompagner de représentation et de langage. Mais la représentation fait elle-même problème au point qu’il y a, et aujourd’hui de façon spécifique, crise dans la représentation. En effet, les hommes hésitent entre croyance et doute face aux représentations : face aux médias – ceux qui en ont besoin pour croire ou ceux qui les utilisent pour douter et réfléchir –, face à la photographie –« ça a été » ou « ça a été joué » –, face au capitalisme – « il n’y a pas d’alternative » de Thatcher à Merkel ou « un autre monde est possible »–,face à l’économie – ceux qui croient que c’est une science ou ceux qui s’interrogent, sans oublier les nouveaux sophistes qui font croire que c’est une science –, face à la politique – « nos démocraties électives ne sont pas, ou de façon inaccomplie, des démocraties représentatives »disait Ricœur. C’est une crise généralisée de et dans la représentation :en politique, en économie, en art, en information ; et donc dans les médias, dans la photographie, dans le capitalisme.Ce livre analyse, selon ces trois perspectives, cette crise. Et ce,grâce à deux artistes, Bernard Kœst et Maria Piaz Maureira, et à huit théoriciens, principalement coréens et français, Ju Hyung-il, Lee Young june, Park Sang-woo, Pierre Abramovici, Cécile Girousse, François Soulages, Julien Verhaeghe et Rodrigo Zúñiga.
