From 'Wild Tales' to 'Zama', Argentine cinema has produced some of the most visually striking and critically lauded films of the 2000s. Argentina also boasts some of the most exciting contemporary poetry in the Spanish language. What happens when its film and poetry meet on screen? 'Moving Verses' studies the relationship between poetry and cinema in Argentina. Although both the 'poetics of cinema' and literary adaptation have become established areas of film scholarship in recent years, the diverse modes of exchange between poetry and cinema have received little critical attention. The book analyses how film and poetry transform each another, and how these two expressive media behave when placed into dialogue.

"In spite of the wealth of screenwriting manuals and guidebooks on how to write a screenplay, there are, nevertheless, few critical academic studies on dramaturgical techniques from the screenwriter’s perspective. This thesis, building on the tradition of drama theories, expands and deepens understanding of the contribution and function of the screenplay within the film-making process, generates new knowledge of dramatic writing for film practitioners, and provides a reflection on contemporary dramaturgical strategies, methods and techniques in film-making. This thesis introduces the dramaturgical approach in film, which is employed as a framework for a dramaturgical analysis of two of Andrei Tarkovsky’s films – Ivan’s Childhood (1962) and Nostalgia (1983). The analysis identifies certain dramaturgical tools and techniques, which differ from those of classical dramaturgy and which can be characterized as tools of poetic dramaturgy."--

Este libro busca contribuir al impulso del estudio del actual cine poético hispanoamericano e íbero-peninsular, analizando aquellos modos contra-narrativos que enfatizan las particularidades formales del medio audiovisual, a la vez que rebajan el desarrollo del contenido --desplazando la acción fuera de plano. El presente libro parte asimismo de la premisa que la modernidad cinematográfica constituye el marco de referencia teórico-artístico al que muchos directores de cine poético recurren para elaborar sus propuestas fílmicas. Por ello, se propone también analizar las estrategias de composición vinculadas a la tradición cinematográfica de la modernidad que han sido críticamente reexaminadas en las películas producidas en el ámbito hispanoamericano e íbero-peninsular durante las primeras dos décadas del siglo XXI.
