Abstract

Low-frequency waves in space plasmas have been studied for several decades, and our knowledge gain has been incremental with several paradigm-changing leaps forward. In our solar system, such waves occur in the ionospheres and magnetospheres of planets, and around our Moon. They occur in the solar wind, and more recently, they have been confirmed in the Sun's atmosphere as well. The goal of wave research is to understand their generation, their propagation, and their interaction with the surrounding plasma. Low-frequency Waves in Space Plasmas presents a concise and authoritative up-to-date look on where wave research stands : What have we learned in the last decade ? What are unanswered questions ? While in the past waves in different astrophysical plasmas have been largely treated in separate books, the unique feature of this monograph is that it covers waves in many plasma regions, including : waves in geospace, ionosphere and magnetosphere waves in planetary magnetospheres, waves at the moon, waves in the solar wind, waves in the solar atmosphere. Because of the breadth of topics covered, this volume should appeal to a broad community of space scientists and students, and it should also be of interest to astronomers/astrophysicists who are studying space plasmas beyond our Solar System.

Abstract

A dusty plasma (or complex plasma) is a plasma (ionized gas) in which relatively massive particulates (dust grains) are embedded. Dusty plasmas occur widely in nature and show great industrial potential. This volume reports on the latest developments in dusty plasma physics, from astrophysical to space to laboratory environments. Theoretical and computer simulation advances cover topics such as linear instabilities, nonlinear wave phenomena, and plasma sheaths. Experimental results deal with exciting areas such as particle coagulation, plasma crystals, plasma voids, and microgravity experiments. Four comprehensive overview papers are presented on dusty plasmas in: astrophysics and cosmology, the solar system, and the ionosphere and its environment, as well as on the structure and dynamics of strongly non-ideal plasmas. In addition, eight topical reviews are included, as well as about 90 short research papers.

Abstract

The presentation in the book is based on charge balance on the dust particles, number and energy balance of the constituents and atom-ion-electron interaction in the gaseous plasma. Size distribution of dust particles, statistical mechanics, Quantum effects in electron emission from and accretion on dust particles and nonlinear interaction of complex plasmas with electric and electromagnetic fields have been discussed in the book. The book introduces the reader to basic concepts and typical applications. The book should be of use to researchers, engineers and graduate students.

Abstract

Shock waves are an important feature of solar system plasmas, from the solar corona out to the edge of the heliosphere. This engaging introduction to collisionless shocks in space plasmas presents a comprehensive review of the physics governing different types of shocks and processes of particle acceleration, from fundamental principles to current research. Motivated by observations of planetary bow shocks, interplanetary shocks and the solar wind termination shock, it emphasises the physical theory underlying these shock waves. Readers will develop an understanding of the complex interplay between particle dynamics and the electric and magnetic fields that explains the observations of in situ spacecraft. Written by renowned experts in the field, this up-to-date text is the ideal companion for both graduate students new to heliospheric physics and researchers in astrophysics who wish to apply the lessons of solar system shocks to different astrophysical environments.
