Analyse du corpus de la littérature de peste conservé à la BnF. Après une présentation du substrat biopathologique et de la conjoncture épidémiologique de la période, l'ouvrage analyse cette littérature à partir des ouvrages en français, aborde les représentations et comportements élaborés par la médecine, la religion, etc. et propose une reconstitution des épreuves individuelles et collectives.

Les Œuvres richement illustrées qu'Ambroise Paré publie en 1585, après les deux éditions collectives de 1575 et de 1579, sont le fruit de plus de quarante années de pratique et d'écriture. Elles occupent, dans l'histoire du livre chirurgical, une place unique par l'ampleur de leur dessein. Embrassant toutes les parties de la chirurgie, Paré offre, dans une langue savoureuse, et en dépit de tous les gardiens de secrets, la somme des savoirs de son temps, éclairés par sa longue expérience et son amour du vivant. Il inscrit la chirurgie dans un humanisme qui conduit de la connaissance du corps à la contemplation de la nature, « chambrière du grand Dieu », admirable dans son ordre comme dans ses prodiges les plus surprenants.
