This work is the first French monograph of Steven Pippin, compiling his questionings, showing his technical prowesses and poetic thoughts about photography. The digital revolution was already underway when Steven Pippin became famous with his silver halide proto-photography, taken with everyday-life objects used as darkroom (bathtubs, closets or washing-machines, which is for Pippin the ideal item to take a picture of its environment). Like an engineer, he reinvents the camera, developping new systems and hybrid machines he calls "Non-Cameras". He presents on the same page his invention and its often imperfect results, whose aesthetic is fundamentally linked to the machine that created it. A compilation of themes worked out in Schaerf’s projects for Aperto ‘93, Sonsbeek, and Documenta, this book mixes computer notation and draughtsmanship. The texts are imagistic and the images are language - a single line becomes poetry, literature, architectural drawing, advertisement, doodle or sketch. “Folding Public Plans” is the first comprehensive guide to the work of this artist, produced in cooperation with de Vleeshal, Middleburg, and Portikus, Frankfurt am Main.
