Abstract

Characterization, Epidemiology and Management is the third volume in the Phytoplasma Diseases in Asian Countries series dedicated to the analysis of plant pathogens across Asia. Highlighting genomic studies and molecular approaches for rapid detection of phytoplasma diseases, the book discusses effective control measures for insect vectors across Asia. The chapters in this book discuss the latest biological controls and how best to manage and even eliminate phytoplasma diseases. This is an essential read for students, researchers and agriculturalists interested in plant pathology. Phytoplasma are microorganisms that are transmitted by insect vectors, infecting various different types of annuals and perennials and causing serious damage to crops across Asia. Highlights the latest advances in diagnostic technologies Includes up-to-date information on genome sequencing of important phytoplasma strains across Asia Discusses the epidemiology and management of phytoplasma-associated disease.

Abstract

Diversity, Distribution, and Current Status is the first volume in a three-volume series dedicated to the analysis of this important group of plant pathogens across Asia with a particular focus on geographic distribution. This book offers updated data on the most prevalent phytoplasma diseases specific to each region. Phytoplasmas are emerging plant pathogens all around the world, causing significant economic losses to crops, as well as affecting international trade. The chapters in Volume 1 look closely at different countries and regions across Asia, providing data on country-wide distribution, phytoplasma groups, insect vectors and transmission. The Phytoplama Diseases in Asian Countries series will be an essential read for university students, researchers and agriculturalists interested in Plant Pathology. Volume 1 will be of particular interest to those needing the latest data on the distribution and transmission rates specific to the various regions of Asia. Reviews the geographical distribution of different phytoplasma diseases across Asia Organized by country, providing an in-depth analysis of the phytoplasma prevalent in different regions Provides a wealth of data associated with each phytoplasma disease Highlights the insect vectors transmitting the bacteria.

Abstract

The third volume of the series covers, in three Sections, emerging issues in the integrated management of main diseases of perennial and annual crops. The chapters provide basic data about the diseases concerned, in order to facilitate their detection and recognition either by field and laboratory inspection, discussing the main management possibilities experienced by farmers, plant pathologists and consultants, in different areas of the world. The first Section covers key diseases of stone fruit and apple trees, as well as the phytoplasma diseases of grapevine and fruit crops, the citrus diseases caused by Phytophthora spp., and the management of chestnut diseases, esca complex on grapevine and Rosellinia necatrix root rot. In the second Section, on annual crops, a first chapter describes the use of simulation models for potato late blight management, followed by a review about the potentials of the decision support systems approach, with an example of integrated forecasting system for Phytophthora infestans on potato. Following chapters review the management of bacterial fruit-blotch on cucurbits, Verticillium wilt on tomato, Sclerotinia rot on carrot, and cotton and rice diseases. A further review describes biological and integrated means to control rust diseases. In the third, final Section, two innovating approaches to disease management are reviewed: DNA fingerprinting methods, for microbial pathogens diagnostics with potentials in taxonomy and plant protection, and the management of pests and diseases through the exploitation of endophytes and their metabolites, a new research field with interesting perspectives and benefits in IPM/IDM.
