Slides for the magic or optical lantern were a major tool for knowledge transfer in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Schools, universities, the church and many public and private institutions all over the world relied on the lantern for illustrated lectures and demonstrations. This volume brings together scholarly research on the educational uses of the optical lantern in different disciplines by international specialists, representing the state of the art of magic lantern research today. In addition, it contains a lab section with contributions by archivists and curators and performers reflecting on ways to preserve, present and re-use this immensely rich cultural heritage today.

D'abord utilisée à l'aide de la lanterne magique pour le divertissement, la plaque photographique s'est imposée dans le dernier quart du XIXe siècle comme un outil particulièrement adapté à la production et la diffusion des savoirs. Depuis quelques années, les plaques photographiques, souvent reléguées dans les réserves, voire totalement oubliées depuis un peu plus d'un demi-siècle, sont regardées comme les témoins patrimoniaux de pratiques pédagogiques et savantes révolues. Ce volume collectif s'inscrit dans les recherches actuelles sur le patrimoine pédagogique et scientifique. Il témoigne d'une volonté de mieux connaître ces objets pour mieux les valoriser et les conserver. Il propose également d'examiner les cultures visuelles qu'ils mettent au jour, en particulier en matière de construction et de diffusion des savoirs naturalistes, historiques, archéologiques, géographiques ou ethnographiques entre la fin du XIXe et le milieu du XXe siècle
