Studies in the History of Art, Volume 77. This is a publication by the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (CASVA), the Gallery's research institute. The development of photography from the mid-nineteenth century onward transformed the conditions of appreciation, marketing, and distribution of works of art. The role of the photographic album in this history has not been previously explored in a published study. Here, in twelve collected essays, scholars discuss the many different types of albums that were pioneers in this change, the photographic processes they represent, and their relationship to older reproductive media, with examples drawn mainly from nineteenth-century France, Great Britain, and Germany.

"In Suspended Conversations Martha Langford breathes life into photographic albums. These travelogues, memoirs, thematic collections, and family sagas embody the intimate preoccupations of their compilers and the great events of a golden photographic age, 1860 to 1960. Langford also traces the influence of photograph albums on the installations, photo narratives, and photo sequences of contemporary artists. Whether dealing with art, museum archives, or the family heirloom, Suspended Conversations bring photography into the great conversation about how we remember our stories and send them into the future."--Jacket.

Galleries of Friendship and Fame is the first comprehensive investigation of the origin, development, and practices of 19th-century American photograph albums. In this fascinating book, the author argues that the album—whether functioning as family record, parlor entertainment, social register, national portrait gallery, or advertisement for photography itself—helped transform the nature of self-presentation at the cusp of modernity. This handsome volume examines carte de visite and cabinet card albums from their introduction in the United States in 1861 through the rise of the snapshot at the century’s end. By examining a wealth of previously overlooked primary materials, this study offers a completely new understanding of photograph albums, revealing how they emerged, how they were marketed and sold, and how families displayed and told stories through them. Galleries of Friendship and Fame addresses the history of technology and innovation, the interconnectedness of the commercial and domestic spheres, and the ways photography helped shape notions of identity, family, and nation in a rapidly changing America.

Photographic Memory: The Album in the Age of Photography traces the rise of the album from the turn of the century to the present day, showcasing some of the most important examples in the history of the medium, as collected by the Library of Congress. As photography became an increasingly accessible medium in the twentieth century, the popularity of the photographic album exploded, yielding a wonderful range of objects made for varying purposes—to memorialize, document (officially or unofficially), promote, or educate, and sometimes simply to channel creative energy. The albums that comprise Photographic Memory provide an immensely personal and idiosyncratic historical perspective through the many lenses of these unique objects. From an Alaskan expedition album of Edward Sheriff Curtis’s early work, to Walker Evans’s extended suite of images in study for Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, to a family album by Danny Lyon, this beautifully produced book provides an in-depth look at the history of photography through the handmade objects of some its most famous practitioners, much of which is previously unpublished. The book includes works by photographers and filmmakers such as F. Holland Day, Jim Goldberg, Dorothea Lange, Duane Michals, Leni Riefenstahl, and W. Eugene Smith alongside lesser-known, yet significant albums on subjects as varied as African American vaudeville, the 1915 Jerusalem locust plague, and the folkways of Spain. Each album, beautifully reproduced over numerous spreads, is accompanied by a detailed explanatory text. An insightful history of the album format is included, as well as an informative essay about caring for and restoring albums. At a time when the physical collection of photographs is becoming largely immaterial through digital means. Photographic Memory is a comprehensive illustrated history of a form of presentation that became an art form in itself—a history that has seen radical shifts in the role of handmade art
