This work establishes the presence of ambiguous, polyvalent characterisation of the first-person voice in the Petrarchan poem sequence. It argues that such characterisation triggers a reader-response mechanism characterised by ambivalence and interest which could be called splintered identification. This means of identifying helps promote reader-involvement and foster the perception of the sequence as an integral work, concerns which betray the presence of novelistic thinking. This book contains two color photographs.

Pétrarque a bénéficié au XVIe siècle d'un prestige exceptionnel, et il a joué un rôle fondateur dans la formation de la langue et de la poésie vernaculaires. Le sonnet, dont il donnait le modèle, a été une forme unificatrice de la culture des différentes cours d'Europe. L'imitation de sa poésie, le culte voué à sa personnalité de poète et d'amoureux, le respect plus général pour le lettré constituent les formes complémentaires d'une même référence, aussi forte qu'énigmatique. Les études réunies dans ce volume examinent la présence et le rôle de Pétrarque dans l'œuvre des principaux poètes français de la Renaissance et de quelques minores. Elles mettent en évidence le rôle des médiations, traductions ou éditions, et soulignent les formes d'une création littéraire fondée sur l'imitation et la variation. Par les répétitions et les contradictions qu'elles font apparaître, elles entendent compléter et préciser l'histoire trop générale du pétrarquisme en France, apportant une première contribution systématique aux commémorations du poète en son septième centenaire.
