This publication shows the ambitious transformation of Skanderbeg Square, in Tirana, Albania. The project was initiated by the then Mayor of Tirana and current Prime Minister of Albania Edi Rama and realized under current mayor Erion Veliaj. It is the result of a collaboration between Belgian architecture office 51N4E, Albanian artist Anri Sala, Belgian environmental designers Plant en Houtgoed, and Albanian company for project implementation iRI. Transforming the central square of a nation that is founded only in 1912 and that is now a developing young democracy, the project compresses all the hope and tension that come with that transition. With its focus on transition, this publication is a pilot episode of a series called Chapters, a progressive documentation of the work of architecture office 51N4E and its collaborations with related people and practices. Every Chapter combines the presentation of one or more projects with a forward-looking reflection on the key issues that shape them. Produced progressively over the course of the next years, the ambition of the whole series is to outline how 51N4E aims to engage with contemporary society in all of its complexity.

"Make New History, the companion publication to the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial, invites speculation on the status and importance of history to architecture today. The book brings together an eminent collection of historians, curators, and practitioners--including Giovanna Borasi, Edward Eigen, Sarah Herda, Robert Somol, Martino Stierli, Philip Ursprung, Jesús Vassallo, and Sarah Whiting--and features over a hundred artists and architects from the exhibition. The 2017 Biennial focuses on the efforts of contemporary architects to align their work with versions of history. From the diverse voices within discipline, it examines the interplay of design and the broadening recall of and access to historical source material. In the realm of building practice, participants interrogate how sites are made up of the historical accumulation of materials, regulations, social conventions, and memories. Issues under consideration are the regulation and management of power and identity, what prevails and what does not, and how to recognize the significance of untold narratives." -- Amazon.com

Peter Swinnen, Johan Anrys and Freek Persyn call themselves 51N4E, a name that refers to the geographic coordinates of their place of business, located in Brussels, Belgium. The somewhat immodest subtitle that underscores their cryptic collective moniker--Space Producers--has been justified by their transformations of dwelling spaces, their recent renovation of the Groeninge Museum in Bruges, and their most important commission to date, the conversion of an old brewery in Mechelen into a cultural center. One of the most talented and promising architecture bureaus in northern Europe, their collective has recently been awarded the prestigious Maaskant Prize for young architects, the most important prize in the Netherlands. Recent winners include Liesbeth van der Pol, Neutelings Rietdijk, and Adriaan Geuze--all Dutch, as you can see. 51N4E are the first non-Dutch winners ever. In recognition of this honor, 51N4E is being treated to a first monograph; Space Production will present a complete overview of the bureau's work, accompanied by essays about their distinctive design ideas.

Brussels-based 51N4E deals with matters of architectural design, concept development, and strategic spatial transformations. Headed by Johan Anrys and Freek Persyn, the office was founded in 1998 and aspires to contribute to social and urban transformation. 'How Things Meet', a photo-novel, tells the story of 51N4E in multiple ways. Combining short stories by Falma Fshazi with photographs by Stefano Graziani, it is a narrative of discovery and embracing otherness, as well as a retrospective look at projects since 2004.

Focus made nowadays on dialogue has us thinking about the place dialogue has in the design process in architecture. In The Things Around Us, we reflect--through conversation with 51N4E (Brussels) and Rural Urban Framework (Hong Kong)--on the role conversation plays in contemporary architectural practice and on the ways in which a building relates to its environment. Today, as curator Francesco Garutti writes in his introduction to the project, the increasingly polymorphous, globalized, and complex nature of contexts means that they are constantly changing, shaped by countless economic, political, and cultural shifts. Whether in the biggest cities or most remote villages, architectural practice ends up feeling less about the creation of buildings than about the careful coordination of the many things that surround and influence places and their identities. In response, architects like those of 51N4E and Rural Urban Framework have to shift their positions to become choreographers of dialogue, mediating between communities, between politicians and villagers, and between large-scale forces and local constraints. Architects have to allow the things around them to take the lead in the conversation.

Many architects and engineers today believe that the most sustainable building is the one that is never demolished. The third edition of the Chapters series developed by the Belgian architecture firm 51N4E therefore tells the story of the transformation of two office towers from the 1970s according to the principles of reduce-reuse-recycle. Against all odds, the former World Trade Center in Brussels will be repurposed in a previously unimaginable way. After many years of vacancy, the building now stands for a new approach to urban development and becomes a showcase for dealing with building fabric from the 1970s that is threatened with demolition, in a more sustainable way. This publication tells the story of the unlikely journey to obtain the building permit, tracing the events that led to this new lease of life. Starting from the initial dream of dismantling the World Trade Center, it recounts the complex and layered process that shaped the innovative adaptive-reuse project called ZIN. Even if the circular, spatial, and material setup is unique to the project, the concepts and the processes behind it are not. By breaking down the complexity of its components, we can understand what has happened, and—more importantly—what could happen to other buildings as well. That is the reason this publication bares witness: to learn how to not demolish a building.
