« Les homélies sont souvent ennuyeuses », entend-on régulièrement dire sur un ton résigné. Et si la rhétorique pouvait contribuer à ce que celles-ci soient plus vivifiantes ? Certains ont tendance à se méfier de la rhétorique, au prétexte qu'elle voilerait la Parole, jusqu'à accorder trop d'importance à l'intelligence pratique du prédicateur. D'autres pensent, au contraire, que le travail rhétorique est central dans l'annonce de la Parole, et en appellent volontiers au célèbre discours de saint Paul sur l'aréopage. Si la rhétorique est une aide précieuse pour discerner la justesse de nos actions, n'est-elle pas un outil dans la prédication afin que ses auditeurs soient mieux à même de discerner comment vivre une vie plus authentiquement christique ? Comment concevoir la place des émotions (pathos), de l'authenticité (ethos) et de la parole structurée (logos) dans l'annonce de la Parole qui doit enivrer spirituellement ? Qu'en est-il de la signification de la parole et de son rapport au silence et au réel ?
