Abstract

The internationally renowned British artist Grayson Perry, winner of the Turner Prize in 2003, is a vivid chronicler of contemporary life. His work abounds with autobiographical references, which can be read in tandem with issues relating to class, taste and the status of artists and artisans. Packed with vivid images, and a number of gatefold pages, this book provides an overview of Perry's fascinating career focusing on his work in a variety of media ranging from ceramic and tapestry to embroidery and print. The acclaimed art historian and biographer Jenny Uglow provides a personal insight into Perry's work, and an interview between Perry and Tim Marlow, the RA's Artistic Director, reveals the many sides of Perry's personality. This book accompanies the exhibition 'Making Meaning', curated by Erin Manns and the first exhibition in a three-year collaboration between The Gallery at Windsor and the Royal Academy.

Abstract

"This is an enormously appealing book about art, and about one of our most recognisable artists. Grayson Perry came to national attention when he accepted the Turner Prize as his alter ego, Clare and wearing his best dress but this funny, unsettling and intimate biography brings us the story of how he grew from a nervous schoolboy, living in fear of his violent stepfather, to a world renowned potter and transvestite."--Publisher's web site.

Abstract

Abstract

A first-time collection of Grayson Perry's sketches, Sketchbooks follows the evolution of his career from art school to the present day. Grayson Perry has been using sketchbooks as a place to record and develop ideas - whether for pots, tapestries, clothes, houses or exhibitions, or for nothing at all - for over thirty years. Bringing together his favourites for the first time and showing some of the finished works that result from these initial drawings, the result is a rich, beautiful book perfect for those who want to know more about an artist's creative process.

Abstract

"Grayson Perry, renowned for his ceramic vases decorated with shocking, unconventional imagery, rose to fame in 2003 when he won the Turner Prize. Since then, Perry has remained an important voice in the arts and the contemporary discussion of gender--in 2016, he published the critically acclaimed book The Descent of Man. Perry's hard-hitting yet exquisite work, which also includes tapestry, prints, sculpture, and drawing, references his own upbringing and his life as a transvestite while engaging with broader issues, from war and religion to politics and sex. Grayson Perry, now in an expanded and updated edition to cover his work up to 2019, explores Perry's art through a discussion of his major themes and subjects. Jacky Klein's text is complemented by intimate and insightful commentaries on individual pieces by the artist, giving unique access to his imaginative world and creative processes. Over 225 of Perry's works are illustrated, as well as a rich selection of the visual material that has inspired him, from Afghan war rugs, Sumatran batiks, and medieval altarpieces to the paintings of Pieter Bruegel and the American Outsider artist Henry Darger." --Amazon.com
