Abstract

A first-time collection of Grayson Perry's sketches, Sketchbooks follows the evolution of his career from art school to the present day. Grayson Perry has been using sketchbooks as a place to record and develop ideas - whether for pots, tapestries, clothes, houses or exhibitions, or for nothing at all - for over thirty years. Bringing together his favourites for the first time and showing some of the finished works that result from these initial drawings, the result is a rich, beautiful book perfect for those who want to know more about an artist's creative process.

Abstract

Abstract

Grayson Perry, renowned for his ceramic vases decorated with shocking and unconventional imagery, is one of a generation of contemporary British artists to have emerged on the international stage since the early 1990s. He shot to fame in 2003 when he won the prestigious Turner Prize, collecting the award wearing a lilac babydoll dress and red pumps. His hard-hitting yet exquisite work, which includes prints, embroidery, sculpture and drawing as well as pots, references his own upbringing and his life as a transvestite while also engaging with broader issues, from war and religion to politics and sex. In this first major monograph on the artist, writer and art historian Jacky Klein explores Perry’s work through a discussion of his major themes and subjects. Her text is complemented by a series of intimate, insightful commentaries on individual pieces by the artist himself, giving unique access to his imaginative world and creative processes. Over 150 of Perry’s works are illustrated, as well as a rich selection of the visual material that has inspired him, from Afghan war rugs, medieval altarpieces and satirical prints to the paintings of Pieter Bruegel, Anselm Kiefer and the American Outsider artist Henry Darger. With an up-to-date biography, bibliography and exhibition history, this definitive book explores fully the achievements of Perry’s twenty-five-year career.

Abstract

Catalogue of exhibition combining Grayson Perry's own work with objects from across the British Museum's collection. "Drawing on such intriguing and diverse themes as pilgrimage, shamanism and tomb guardians, Grayson Perry takes the reader on a journey to an imaginary afterlife. 'The Tomb of an Unknown Craftsman is of a treasure hoard from a distinct civilisation. The difference is that it is a civilisation of one. The territory it springs from is my imagination. The relationship between my personal themes and obsessions and the vastness of world culture as represented in the British Museum is like a narrow pilgrimage trail across an infinite plain.' Grayson Perry's centrepiece to this fascinating journey is a major artwork: a metal tomb in the form of a ship, encrusted with reliefs and artistic cargo based on, or actually cast from, objects in the collection of the British Museum. The occupant sails into the afterlife surrounded by the talismans of many faiths and peoples. This is a memorial to all the anonymous craftsmen that over the centuries have fashioned the man-made wonders of the world, many of which are on display in the Museum. Around the tomb, the other artworks - ceramics, tiles, cast metal sculpture, textiles and prints - are laid out in ritualistic symmetry as if they once belonged somewhere else. Alongside his own works, Grayson Perry presents a personal selection of objects from the British Museum that are the inspiration for his pieces or connected strongly with them thematically or aesthetically. Including an introduction by Grayson Perry and lavishly illustrated, this book takes us to the fantasy world of a contemporary artist who never fails to challenge and unsettle his audience. Turner Prize winner Grayson Perry uses the seductive qualities of ceramics, tapestry, metalwork and other art forms to make stealthy comments about societal injustices and hypocrisies, and to explore a variety of historical and contemporary themes."--Publisher's website.
