Abstract

This volume offers an appreciation of the value of intertextuality—from Greek, Roman, Jewish, and biblical traditions—as related to the post-apostolic level of Christian development within the second century. Not least of these foundational pillars is the certain impact of the Second Sophistic movement during this period with its insipient influence on much of early Christian theology’s formation. The variety of these strands of inspiration created a tapestry of many diverse elements that came to shape the second-century Christian situation. Here one sees biblical texts at work, Jewish and Greek foundations at play, and interaction among patristic authors as they seek to reconcile their competing perspectives on what it meant to be “Christian” within the contemporary context.

Abstract

Scholars of the Gospel of Mark usually discuss the merits of patristic references to the Gospel’s origin and Mark’s identity as the “interpreter” of Peter. But while the question of the Gospel’s historical origins draws attention, no one has asked why, despite virtually unanimous patristic association of the Gospel with Peter, one of the most prestigious apostolic founding figures in Christian memory, Mark’s Gospel was mostly neglected by those same writers. Not only is the text of Mark the least represented of the canonical Gospels in patristic citations, commentaries, and manuscripts, but the explicit comments about the Evangelist reveal ambivalence about Mark’s literary or theological value.Michael J. Kok surveys the second-century reception of Mark, from Papias of Hierapolis to Clement of Alexandria, and finds that the patristic writers were hesitant to embrace Mark because they perceived it to be too easily adapted to rival Christian factions. Kok describes the story of Mark’s Petrine origins as a second-century move to assert ownership of the Gospel on the part of the emerging Orthodox Church.

Abstract

Esegesi e polemica: Celso e Macario di Magnesia (E. Saponaro, P. De Giorgi, A. Cataldo); III. Ebrei, pagani e Sacre Scrittur (P. Andris, G. Rinaldi, M. Ryzhik).

Abstract

In Eusebius the Evangelist, Jeremiah Coogan analyzes Eusebius of Caesarea's fourth-century reconfiguration of the Gospels as a window into broader questions of technology and textuality in the ancient Mediterranean. Eusebius' editorial intervention -- involving tables, sectioning, and tables of contents -- intertwines inextricably with a broader late ancient transformation in reading. To illuminate Eusebius' innovative use of textual technologies, the study juxta-poses diverse ancient disciplines-including chronography, astronomy, geography, medi-cine, philosophy, and textual criticism-with a wide range of early Christian sources, at-tending particularly to neglected evidence from material texts and technical literature. These varied phenomena reveal how Eusebius' fourfold Gospel worked in the hands of readers. The four Gospels of the New Testament (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) share language, narratives, and ideas, yet they also differ in structure and detail. The sophisticated system through which Eusebius organized this intricate web of textual relationships is known as the Eusebian apparatus. Eusebius' creative juxtapositions of Gospel material had an enduring impact on Gospel reading. Not only did Eusebius continue earlier trajectories of Gospel writing, but his apparatus continued to generate new possibilities in the hands of readers. For more than a millennium, in more than a dozen languages and in thousands of manuscripts, Eusebius' fourth-century invention transformed readers' en-counters with Gospel text on the page. By employing emerging textual technologies, Eu-sebius created new possibilities of reading, rewriting the fourfold Gospel in a significant and durable way.
