Abstract

Based on five years of ethnographic research among Pashtun men in Afghanistan, this book presents a psychological study of adjustment and adaptation (or lack thereof) to cultural norms and rules of masculinity, and of how social expectations impact the subjectivity and inner lives of the protagonists. It chronicles Afghan Pashtun men's private conflicts, contradictions, and ambivalences just as much as it shows how three decades of continuous conflict have exacerbated and deepened the place and role of violence in Pashtun society, where what was considerate legitimate and justifiable behavior in the battlefield has spilled over into everyday life among non-combatants.

Abstract

Pashtun Identity and Geopolitics in Southwest Asia brings together Pakistan and Afghanistan as two inseparable entities by investigating areas such as the evolution and persistence of the Taliban, quest for Pashtun identity, the ambivalent status of the tribal region and the state of civic clusters on both sides. In addition to their relations with the United States and the EU, a due attention has been devoted to regional realties while looking at relations with India and China. The study explores vital disciplines of ethnography, history, Islamic studies, and international relations and benefits from a wide variety of source material. The volume takes into account the salient subjects including political Islam, nature and extent of violence since 9/11, failure of Western policies in the region, the Drone warfare, and the emergence of new regimes in Kabul, Islamabad and Delhi offering fresh opportunities as well as new threat perceptions.

Abstract

The Defiant Border explores why the Afghan-Pakistan borderlands have remained largely independent of state controls from the colonial period into the twenty-first century. This book looks at local Pashtun tribes' modes for evading first British colonial, then Pakistani, governance; the ongoing border dispute between Pakistan and Afghanistan; and continuing interest in the region from Indian, US, British, and Soviet actors. It reveals active attempts by first British, then Pakistani, agents to integrate the tribal region, ranging from development initiatives to violent suppression. The Defiant Border also considers the area's influence on relations between Pakistan, Afghanistan, and India, as well as its role in the United States' increasingly global Cold War policies. Ultimately, the book considers how a region so peripheral to major centers of power has had such an impact on political choices throughout the eras of empire, decolonization, and superpower competition, up to the so-called 'war on terror'.
