Née Infante, Isabelle passe son enfance dans les châteaux de ses grands-parents Philippe V et Élisabeth Farnèse, séjourne pendant un an à Versailles chez son grand-père Louis XV, et se retrouve princesse de Parme, duché francophone que sa mère Louise-Élisabeth, Madame Première, transforme en un "petit Paris". À dix-huit ans, elle devient archiduchesse et la préférée de sa belle-mère, l'impératrice Marie-Thérèse, à Schönbrunn. La vie des Cours au milieu du XVIIIe siècle, avec ses châteaux et ses jardins, ses opéras et son théâtre, ses fêtes et ses fastes, est décrite avec une minutie inaccoutumée. On y suit l'épanouissement psychologique et intellectuel de cette princesse extraordinaire, une des femmes les plus brillantes et mystérieuses du siècle, ainsi qu'en témoignent ses écrits et sa correspondance. Ses idées novatrices, ses dons artistiques et son caractère à multiples facettes laissent prévoir qu'elle sera un jour une grande impératrice réformiste aux côtés de Joseph II. Mais les affres causées par le conflit entre sa religiosité et la nature de ses amours secrètes avec sa belle-sœur l'archiduchesse Marie-Christine, la déchirent et la conduisent à la mort...
