Ce livre vise à contribuer aux recherches portant sur le phénomène du parallélisme sémantique (c’est-à-dire le fait que deux mots différents – ou plus – possèdent l’un et l’autre deux valeurs sémantiques qui se trouvent être identiques). Fort négligées, ces recherches sont capitales pour l’étymologiste et le lexicographe. Car plus on peut multiplier les coïncidences de ce type, mieux on échappe à la subjectivité et à l’argument d’autorité lorsqu’on établit des rapprochements sémantiques. En outre, ce type d’enquête peut apporter une contribution à la sémantique générale et ouvrir des horizons nouveaux pour l’étude des mentalités et des cultures. Le présent ouvrage est alimenté de nombreux exemples pris aux langues sémitiques. Il sert de tremplin pour une réflexion portant sur toutes les langues.
