On July 6, 2006, Professor Wolfgang K. H. Panofsky from Stanford (USA) was awarded the honorary senator status of the University of Hamburg in a special session of the Academic Senate. The speeches given are documented in this volume. The volume is supplemented by an interview given by Professor Panofsky on July 6, 2006 in Hamburg, and a tabular overview of his career, his public functions and honours.Wolfgang K. H. Panofsky, born in Berlin in 1919, spent most of his childhood and adolescence in Hamburg. Forced to emigrate by the Nazis, he came to the USA in 1934. After studying physics in Princeton and at the California Institute of Technology, he quickly gained a great reputation in elementary particle physics research. He was one of the initiators of the construction of a large electron linear accelerator, which began operation at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) in 1972. From 1961 until his retirement in 1984, Professor Panofsky was director of this institute.Through his great professional authority, his personal integrity and his commitment to peace and humanism, he became a role model for many young scientists. His role model was one of the formative influences that contributed to the founding of the Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker Center for Science and Peace Research at the University of Hamburg.

Wolfgang K.H. Panofsky is a prominent physicist who has been an active contributor to elementary particle physics, accelerator building, and laboratory administration as well as to international security policy and arms control. This volume is a somewhat unorthodox memoir. In Panofsky’s words: "This volume contains an unsystematic account of my past work; it is not intended to be an autobiography in the conventional meaning of the term. It is not even remotely a scholarly description of the momentous developments in which I was able to participate; rather it is a recital of memorable episodes, borrowing from the compulsory preface of facetious British history: ‘History is not what you thought. It is what you can remember.’ " Pief.

"Though inspired by a Panofskyan legacy, this book diverges at certain points from Erwin Panofsky's declared objectives, and calls attention to several of aspects that were until now less accentuated in his intellectual reception. Insisting on the importance of iconology as a method for art history and the humanities in general, it shows how examining this promotes a cooperation between the history of art and the history of philosophy. It discusses whether Panofsky's method could be of use for general questions in the epistemology of the historical sciences that examine human works. Figural Philology also shows that Panofsky shares affinities with twentieth-century romance philology. A reading of Panofsky's work alongside the philological enterprise of Erich Auerbach and several other authors demonstrates that a proper appropriation of the philological impulse can provide a way out of the methodological antimony still hanging between hyper-formalist and hyper-theoretical approaches to the history of art."--Bloomsbury Publishing.
