Abstract

"Transportation Amid Pandemics: Practices and Policies is the first reference on pandemics (especially COVID-19) in the context of transport, logistics, and supply chains. This book investigates the relationships between pandemics and transport and evaluates impacts of COVID-19 and effects of policy responses to address them. It explores how to recover from pandemics, reveals governance for immediate policy responses and future innovations, suggests strategies for post-pandemic sustainable and resilient development, shares lessons of COVID-19 policymaking across countries, and discusses how to transform transport systems for a better future. Transportation Amid Pandemics offers transport researchers and policymakers the scientific evidence they need to support their decisions and solutions against pandemics."--

Abstract

Modernizing Global Health Security to Prevent, Detect, and Respond explores—through thoughtful, thorough, and diverse scientific review and analyses—factors that have led to recent public health emergencies and offers a vision for a better protected global environment. The authors consider the history of global health security, governance, and legal structures with an eye toward novel approaches for the present and future. The book presents a vision for a more protected and safer global public health future (with the actions needed to achieve it) to prevent, detect, and respond to (re)emerging threats. Its aim is to chart a way forward with the understanding that future pandemics must and can be prevented.

Abstract

"The COVID-19 pandemic represents an important watershed for modern society. The world will never be the same. Almost all economic and social activities need to be reviewed, rethought, and adapted to the new context. The COVID-19 Disruption and the Global Health Challenge explains a complex phenomenon that has left doubts and uncertainties among the many who want to understand. The book fills some of these gaps by providing answers to a series of questions including why the epidemic originated, how it spread, how it was managed, how long we will have to live with it, what effects did it have on the economy, who will be most affected, how the new world will change us, and how our way of seeing the world will change. Lastly, the book proposes some solutions to prevent and be more prepared to the recurrence of such events as well as to manage them more effectively. Key Features: Clarifies the scientific knowledge around COVID-19. Provides a multidisciplinary analysis involving biology, economics, epidemiology, medicine, and statistics relating to COVID-19. Focuses on the need to invest and develop the bioeconomy as the basis of a new global and integrated health system, pulling together conservation, resource economics, and preventive and curative medicine."--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

Novel AI and Data Science Advancements for Sustainability in the Era of COVID-19 discusses how the role of recent technologies applied to health settings can help fight virus outbreaks. Moreover, it provides guidelines on how governments and institutions should prepare and quickly respond to drastic situations using technology to support their communities in order to maintain life and functional as efficiently as possible. The book discusses topics such as AI-driven histopathology analysis for COVID-19 diagnosis, bioinformatics for subtype rational drug design, deep learning-based treatment evaluation and outcome prediction, sensor informatics for monitoring infected patients, and machine learning for tracking and prediction models. In addition, the book presents AI solutions for hospital management during an epidemic or pandemic, along with real-world solutions and case studies of successful measures to support different types of communities.

Abstract

To aid national and international efforts to support countries in enhancing their pandemic preparedness in the face of COVID-19, this paper draws from the World Bank's Service Delivery Indicator surveys to highlight key aspects of health service preparedness in Kenya, Sierra Leone, and Tanzania. The results of this analysis paint a highly variable picture. At least 10 percent of lower-level facilities in all three countries have inpatient care capacity, suggesting that these lower-level facilities could help absorb surges in patient flow. Less than half of the facilities in the three countries have a fixed or mobile phone and less than a third have internet access, suggesting a likely challenge in communication and timely sharing of essential information. Concerningly, less than half of the facilities have appropriate handwashing facilities for patients, with even lower rates in rural areas. Between 80 and 95 percent of the facilities have a thermometer to diagnose fever, but availability of a thermometer, stethoscope, and blood pressure cuff together is variable (ranging from almost 90 percent of the facilities in Tanzania to less than 65 percent in Sierra Leone). The paper concludes by highlighting key innovations for future surveys to improve measurement of pandemic preparedness.

Abstract

"Pandemic Risk, Response, and Resilience: COVID-19 Responses in Cities Around the World examines the pandemic’s global impacts on public health, economies, society and labor. The book shows how COVID-19 intensified natural and anthropogenic hazards and destroyed years of communities, governments and the work of development organizations and their investments. It focuses on how disaster resilience is central to achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals in a post-COVID-19 era. Sections cover current governance practices, with special attention given to Asia’s more successful responses. It shows how the various sectors across that society were most impacted by COVID-19, including tourism and food systems."--

Abstract

Mathematical Modeling, Simulations, and Artificial Intelligence for Emergent Pandemic Diseases: Lessons Learned from COVID-19 includes new research, models and simulations developed during the COVID-19 pandemic into how mathematical methods and practice can impact future response. Chapters go beyond forecasting COVID-19, bringing different scale angles and mathematical techniques (e.g., ordinary differential and difference equations, agent-based models, artificial intelligence, and complex networks) which could have potential use in modeling other emergent pandemic diseases. A major part of the book focuses on preparing the scientific community for the next pandemic, particularly the application of mathematical modeling in ecology, economics and epidemiology. Readers will benefit from learning how to apply advanced mathematical modeling to a variety of topics of practical interest, including optimal allocations of masks and vaccines but also more theoretical problems such as the evolution of viral variants.

Abstract

The National Strategy for a Resilient Public Health Supply Chain lays out the U.S. government vision to protect the health and security of Americans by ensuring a supply chain for personal protective equipment (PPE) and technology (PPT), medical devices, medicines, and other public health supplies that is resilient against disruptions from pandemics and other biological threats. Additional forethought and collaboration amongst policy makers, manufacturers, and users is needed to make PPE and PPT innovation, standardization, stockpiling, and use more resilient. The National Academies convened a public workshop in March 2023 to explore innovative approaches and technologies needed to update and streamline the U.S. standardization system for PPE and PPT in support of supply chain resiliency. Discussions included ways to improve the effectiveness, safety, supply stability, and accessibility of PPE and PPT designed for use in health care settings, by critical infrastructure workers, and by the general public. This Proceedings of a Workshop summarizes the discussions held during the workshop.
