The palaces of Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung and Changgyeonggung were burnt down during the Imjin War or the Hideyoshi Invasion. Despite King Seonjo's intentions to rebuild them all, only Changdeokgung and Changgyeong were rebuilt during his reign. Gyeongbokgung, the main palace, was left in ruins until the reign of King Gojong. The author explains why this palace was not rebuilt until after the other two. While Story of Our Palaces, published in 1999, is for general readership, this book is a scholarly work with footnotes and detailed guide to the palaces of Joseon.
