Ils ne sont pas très nombreux, les auteurs belges fabricants d'images à être mieux connus, respectés et appréciés à l'autre bout du monde qu'ici, dans notre petit pays. Josse Goffin est de ceux-là; il appartient à cette tribu restreinte qui aura marqué l'époque de ses inventions graphiques bien au-delà de nos frontières. Les images présentées ici réussissent le paradoxe d'être typiques de leur temps, au tournant des millénaires, c'est-à-dire absolument modernes et, aussi, ancrées profondément dans nos esprits parce que, comme la bonne vigne, elles plongent leurs racines dans des strates profondes du patrimoine imaginaire de l'humanité. Une connexion qui leur permet une universalité certaine, pour autant que le mot ne soit pas galvaudé. Alors qu'aujourd'hui le monde artistique et graphique change de manière radicale avec l'apparition des techniques numériques, il est bon, il est sain de reconnaître ces auteurs (ces artistes ?) qui peuvent créer des images à partir du degré zéro de la technologie. Ils sont rares, en effet, et Josse Goffin se revendique de cette minorité de créateurs qui invente des signes à partir de quelques grammes de pigments, de poussières et de terres colorées, d'un peu d'eau et de glaise, comme on les utilise depuis les temps immémoriaux.

The music boy' exhibition at the New Art Gallery Walsall is the artist's first in the United Kingdom. A 168-page hardback, illustrated catalogue featuring extensive essays by Andrew Graham-Dixon and Martin Herbert, as well as a foreword by Charlotte Mullins was published on the occasion. The exhibition is titled after a quadriptych of paintings depicting the artist's grandmother and his uncle playing an accordion. Jan Vanriet's work mainly concerns the memory of history and the construction of pictorial surface. As Martin Herbert writes: 'Vanriet builds up his paintings in layers, and the strata of underpainting have, in his case, a polyvalent quality. In some cases they form glazes that gift the paintings with an internal glow.' Exhibition: The New Art Gallery Walsall, Walsall, UK (29.01-08.05.2016).
