The three defeated Axis powers – Japan, Italy and Germany – incorporated a prohibition on wars of aggression into their democratic constitutions. This book covers the years of the Nuremberg and Tokyo Trials and the constituent assemblies of 1947– 49 through to current debates on the adaptation of the pacifi st articles in line with new “humanitarian” wars. Aspects relating to the birth of the three countries’ constitutions are treated in great detail in three appendices.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has had a long and tortuous relationship with religion over almost the entirety of its existence. As early as 1917, the Bureau began to target religious communities and groups it believed were hotbeds of anti-American politics. Whether these religious communities were pacifist groups that opposed American wars, or religious groups that advocated for white supremacy or direct conflict with the FBI, the Bureau has infiltrated and surveilled religious communities that run the gamut of American religious life. The FBI and Religion recounts this fraught and fascinating history, focusing on key moments in the Bureau's history. Starting from the beginnings of the FBI before World War I, moving through the Civil Rights Movement and the Cold War, up to 9/11 and today, this book tackles questions essential to understanding not only the history of law enforcement and religion, but also the future of religious liberty in America.

Translated by Cecil Wele Manona In November 1949 D.D.T. Jabavu, the South African politician and professor of African languages at Fort Hare University, set out on a four-month trip to attend the World Pacifist Meeting in India. He wrote an isiXhosa account of his journey which was published in 1951 by Lovedale Press. This new edition republishes the travelogue in the original isiXhosa, with an English translation by the late anthropologist Cecil Wele Manona. The travelogue contains reflections on Jabavu's social interactions during his travels, and on the conference itself, where he considered what lessons Gandhian principles might yield for South Africans engaged in struggles for freedom and dignity. His commentary on non-violent resistance, and on the dangers of nationalism and racism, enriches the existing archive of intellectual exchanges between Africa and India from a black South African perspective. The volume includes chapters by the editors that examine the networks of international solidarity - from post-independence India to the anti-colonial struggle in East Africa and the American civil rights movement - which Jabavu helped to strengthen, biographical sketches of Jabavu and of Manona, and an afterword that reflects on the historical and political significance of making African-language texts available to readers across Africa. "Existe-t-il encore un camp de la paix en Israël ? Au début des années 1980, il occupait une place centrale, jusqu'à faire descendre dans la rue des centaines de milliers de personnes. Mais depuis, il semblait décliner alors que le conflit israélo-palestinien s'enlisait dans la violence, surtout avec la seconde Intifada. Aujourd'hui, il peine à se faire entendre et à mobiliser en masse. Ce livre en retrace l'histoire, avec ses succès et ses échecs. C'est surtout après la guerre des Six-Jours que le mouvement de la paix prend forme, aussitôt confronté aux partisans d'une colonisation à outrance des territoires conquis. Mais son étoile pâlit à mesure que la question palestinienne s'invite dans le débat national et que les attentats-suicides sapent la confiance dans le processus de paix engagé par Yitzhak Rabin. Le terrorisme a déstabilisé une opinion publique de plus en plus obsédée par sa sécurité ; le sentiment gagne que les "colombes" mènent un combat aussi illusoire qu'inactuel. Pourtant, le mouvement de la paix n'a pas disparu.
