Abstract

The purpose of this Master’s thesis is to engineer a LED-based solar simulator. As the photovoltaic cells of CubeSats need to be assessed before launching it into space, a simulation tool is required to replicated the extraterrestrial solar spectrum. The research started with a thorough analysis of the extraterrestrial solar spectrum which needs to be replicated. Once this solar spectrum have been characterized, a practical solution have been implemented. The next step was to research about the components that could be used to build up the simulator. It is mainly power LEDs with different wavelengths, LED drivers and power converters. Afterward, these components has been interfaced on a custom printed circuit board. Finally, the board have been programmed through a graphical user interface to have a complete monitoring of the output spectrum. The thesis report is an overview of these successive phases of the conception. At the end, this simulation tool will be used in the aerospace field to assess that the photovoltaic cell harvesting is sufficient enough to power all the electronics of the satellite before making it ready for spatial missions.

Abstract

The latest developments of battery technologies for solar applications have created high expectations in the field. Certain press articles claim that this new advances could revolutionize the solar energy sector and lead to autonomous residential PV systems or micro grids. Nevertheless, this assumptions lack of a proper scientific evaluation and it is still unclear when and under which circumstances battery storage can be viable without government subsidies or policy support. This thesis explores the economical profitability of a grid connected PV system with and without battery in a standard dwelling in Spain for two different crucial moments of the Spanish photovoltaic regulation: 2008 when the solar energy boom occurred and 2016 when the solar energy sector is facing one of its weakest periods.Three different scenarios have been evaluated to find out under which economic conditions, domestic batteries are profitable, considering the different changes in the photovoltaic legislation. Results indicate that latest change in the legislation, which eliminate FITs and add new fees to self-consumed electricity hinder the development of self-consumption. Concluding that without policy support battery storage is not yet economically feasible in Spain.

Abstract

The main objective of this study is to determine if CSP plants with TES are still economically viable when put in competition with PV systems and batteries for a large scale power generation in a global grid setting. Towards this goal, an optimization-based framework is implemented and exploited to identify the best combination of generation means among CSP, PV and battery to satisfy a chosen electricity demands while minimizing the cost of the total installations.

Abstract

Like many emerging markets, the Arab Republic of Egypt is keen to promote distributed solar, defined here as systems below 500 kilowatts, but has struggled to create conditions for growth in the sector. The aim of this paper is to identify policy actions to unlock the distributed solar market for on-grid and off-grid applications, using Egypt as a case study. The paper calculates the rate of return on investment for different distributed solar applications, identifies nonfinancial barriers to scaling up distributed solar, and derives policy implications. For on-grid applications, the analysis finds that neither net metering nor the feed-in tariff makes distributed solar financially attractive, despite recent reductions in electricity subsidies and adjustments of feed-in tariff levels in October 2016. For off-grid applications, the profitability of distributed solar depends highly on the local price of diesel: distributed solar is viable only in areas where diesel is not available at the official (subsidized) price. In addition, several nonfinancial barriers limit the scalability of the distributed solar market. These findings indicate that the distributed solar market in Egypt will remain a niche market in the next few years without strengthened government support. First, for on-grid applications, the net metering scheme should be kept in place until a bankable feed-in tariff has been established. Second, for off-grid applications, the government should explore interventions to unlock opportunities in the agriculture and tourism sectors. Third, the government should strengthen private-sector activity in the sector, including by addressing nonfinancial barriers, such as transaction costs and gaps in the availability of data, and by building capacity among users, suppliers, and financial institutions.

Abstract

Poverty estimates usually lag behind two years, which makes it difficult to provide real-time poverty analysis to assess the impact of economic crisis and shocks among the less well-off, and subsequently limits policy responses. This paper takes advantage of up-to-date average economic welfare indicators like the gross domestic product per capita and comprehensive harmonized micro data of more than 180 household surveys in 15 Latin American countries. The paper tests three commonly used poverty nowcasting methods and ranks their performance by comparing country-specific and regional poverty nowcasts with actual poverty estimates for 2003-14 period. The validation results show that the two bottom-up approaches, which simulate the performance of each agent in the economy to nowcast overall poverty, perform relatively better than the top-down approach, which uses welfare estimates to explain the performance of poverty at an aggregate level over time. The results are robust to additional sensitivity and robustness tests.
