Al ver voor onze jaartelling gebruikten de oude Egyptenaren platina, maar pas rond 1550 werd het bijzondere metaal in Zuid-Amerika herondekt door stropende Spanjaarden. Zij dachten dat het een verontreiniging was van zilver en noemden het plat-i-no (zilvertje). Inmiddels weten we wel beter: platina behoort tot de duurste edelmetalen op aarde. Het witte goud wordt onder andere gebruikt in juwelen, elektronische schakelingen en high-tech labapparatuur. De vraag is al jaren hoger dan het aanbod, vandaar dat recycling steeds meer aandacht krijgt. Een van de belangrijkste toepassingen van platina is in autokatalysatoren, waarbij reacties worden gekatalyseerd die schadelijke gassen (CO, NOx) omzetten. De basis van de platinakatalyse werd al begin negentiende eeuw gelegd. Maar tweehonderd jaar en een Nobelprijs verder blijkt de chemie daarvan nog steeds ingewikkelder dan gedacht. Ook in de medische wereld is platina doorgedrongen: sinds eind jaren zeventig wordt cisplatina gebruikt voor de behandeling van bepaalde vormen van kanker. Vanwege de vervelende bijwerkingen en andere nadelen hebben farmacologen een reeks nieuwe varianten ontwikkeld. Het wachten is op goedkeuring van de nieuwste generatie platinaverbindingen, die makkelijker toe te dienen zijn en een kleiner risico hebben op resistentie van tumorcellen.
