Professor Gordon's book is a much needed survey of the history of English prose, itself written in a prose which is eminently attractive and economical. The complex strands of development are woven skilfully so as to show with great clarity the constant features from Anglo-Saxon times to the present day, and particular emphasis is laid on the essential continuity of English prose. The subject is seen as part of the history of ideas, and the author shows the fascinating links between prose development and social history. Professor Gordon insists that important prose is not written only by the obviously 'important' writers, and the reader will enjoy the learnedly rich illustration from the work of each period that the author considers most relevant to this theme. For the experience reader, the book gathers a wealth of diverse information and opinion into a conenient summary from unified viewpoint. For the less experienced, it is an informative introduction, with the additional help - in a concluding section - of exercises related to prose of the more familiar kinds written within the modern period.
