Abstract

This original work assesses the impact of globalization on women in Middle Eastern societies. To explore the gendered effects of social change, the authors examine trends within, as well as among, states in the region. Detailed case studies reveal the mixed results of global pressures. For some women, for example, globalization has meant increased access to education and employment; for others, it has resulted in heightened repression under ideologically conservative regimes. The authors' nuanced analyses document how women's responses to these changes are affecting the future of the Middle East.

Abstract

The countries of the South Pacific have struggled to generate sustainable economic growth since their independence. Interventionist policies have failed in the past here, as they have in all other regions. Business and government leaders in this region are now beginning to acknowledge - as has happened in many other developing country regions over the past two decades - that major reforms are needed to put their economies onto a higher growth path. This study examines the growth record of key Pacific island economies and identifies the reasons for their relatively poor performance. It then looks at the process of globalization that is affecting those and indeed all economies increasingly; and the role the WTO has played in that process.

Abstract

This sweeping book details the extent to which the legal revolution emanating from the US has transformed legal hierarchies of power across the globe, while also analyzing the conjoined global histories of law and social change from the Middle Ages to today. It examines the global proliferation of large corporate law firms-a US invention-along with US legal education approaches geared toward those corporate law firms. This neoliberal-inspired revolution attacks complacent legal oligarchies in the name of America-inspired modernism. Drawing on the combined histories of the legal profession, imperial transformations, and the enduring and conservative role of cosmopolitan elites at the top of legal hierarchies, the book details case studies in India, Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan, and China to explain how interconnected legal histories are stories of both revolution and reproduction. Theoretically and methodologically ambitious, it offers a wholly new approach to studying interrelated fields across time and geographies.

Abstract

Since the end of the Cold War, globalization-the process and the idea-has been reshaping the world. Global studies scholarship has emerged to make sense of the transnational manifestations of globalization: economic, social, cultural, ideological, technological, environmental, and postcolonial. But a series of crises in the first two decades of the twenty-first century has put the neoliberal globalization system of the 1990s under severe strain. Are we witnessing a turn toward "deglobalization," intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine or a moment of "reglobalization," spearheaded by digital technology? The contributors to this book employ transdisciplinary research to assess past developments, the current state, and future trajectories of globalization in light of today's dynamics of insecurity, volatility, and geopolitical tensions.

Abstract

Whose international matters, and why? How are geographic regions constructed? What are the channels of engagement between a place, its people, its institutions, and the world? How do we understand the non-West's influence in contemporary global interactions? From humanitarianism and activism to diplomacy and institutional networks, South Asia has been a crucial place for the elaboration of international politics, even before the twentieth century. South Asia Unbound gathers an interdisciplinary group of scholars from across the world to investigate South Asian global engagement at the local, regional, national, and supra-national levels, spanning the time before and after independence. Only by understanding its past entanglements with the world can we understand South Asia's increasing global importance today.

Abstract

"This brilliantly original book dismantles the underlying assumptions that drive the decisions made by companies and governments the world over to show that our shared narrative of the global economy is deeply flawed and, if left unexamined, will lead corporations and countries astray, with dire consequences for us all. For the past fifty years or so, the global economy has been run on three big assumptions: that globalization will continue to spread; that trade is the engine of growth and development; and that economic power is moving from the West to the East. More recently, it has also been taken as a given that our interconnectedness--both physical and digital--will increase without limit. But what if all these assumptions are wrong? What if everything is about to change? Indeed, what if it has already started to change but we just haven't noticed? Increased automation, the advent of additive manufacturing (3D printing, for example), changes in shipping and environmental pressures, among other factors, are coming together to create a fast-changing global economic landscape in which the rules are being rewritten--at once a challenge and an opportunity for companies and countries"-- "This brilliantly original book dismantles the underlying assumptions that drive the decisions made by companies and governments the world over to show that our shared narrative of the global economy is deeply flawed and, if left unexamined, will lead corporations and countries astray, with dire consequences for us all. Abstract

The comparative approach to public policy illuminates the policy process in both foreign and domestic contexts and also provides valuable lessons on how governments and organizations can do things differently. This new introductory text combines informations about public policies in different countries with an explanation of the frameworks that have been used to analyse these policies. It compares public policies across a wide range of countries and across core policy areas, including welfare, education, health care and the environment. This comparison of different policy areas provides the foundation for a critical overview of the main theories and methodological issues in comparative public policy
