Abstract

"What do Barcelona, the Great Wall of China, Acadia National Park, Thailand's Maya Bay, and Reykjavik, Iceland have in common? They are among the growing number of popular tourist destinations around the world that have reached their saturation or 'tipping' points. Tourism's exponential growth in recent years has led to chronic overcrowding, which is degrading natural and historic sites, impacting the well-being of communities, and compromising the visitor experience. This book examines overtourism in five distinct types of tourism destinations: 1) historic cities; 2) national parks and protected areas; 3) World Heritage Sites; 4) beaches and coastal communities; and 5) national and regional destinations. In addition to critiquing the causes and impacts of overtourism, the book will also assess experiments underway to mitigate overtourism in mature destinations and prevent it in emerging ones"--

Abstract

Overtourism explores a growing phenomenon in tourism that is currently creating tensions in both urban and rural tourist destinations worldwide. This volume proposes a framework for a series of possible solutions and management strategies for dealing with overtourism and the various negative impacts that large quantities of tourists can impose. Questioning the causes of this phenomenon - such as increased prosperity and mobility, technological development, issues of security and stigma for certain parts of the world, and so on - this book supposes that better visitor management strategies and distribution of tourists can offset the negative impacts of overtourism. Individual chapters focus on a range of destinations including Venice, Barcelona and Dubrovnik, as well as UNESCO cultural and natural heritage sites, where local political actors and public authorities are not always able to deal with the situation effectively. Integrating research and practice, this book will be of great interest to upper-level students, researchers and academics in tourism, development studies, cultural studies and sustainability, as well as professionals in the field of tourism management.

Abstract

Over the last decade, while many scholars have maintained their interest in the classical debate concerning the impacts of tourism, some have attempted new conceptualisations, while others have converged towards critical narratives promoted by a number of social movements, and have become involved in subsequent discussions on 'overtourism' and 'tourismphobia'. The terms 'overtourism' and 'tourismphobia' have their genesis in the rapid unfolding of unsustainable mass tourism practices and the responses that these have generated amongst academics, practitioners, social movements and grassroots organizations concerned with the detrimental use of urban, rural and coastal spaces, among others, for tourism purposes. The renewed interest in the study of the adverse impacts of tourism, as implied in the term 'overtourism', is related to a variety of well-established causes. 0Travel and Tourism in the Age of Overtourism builds on existing knowledge and makes a theoretical and practical contribution the overtourism debate and the system dynamics underlining it. This collection suggests ways to address this from a tourism and planning perspective. It offers critical reflections on the contemporary evolution of tourism development and the implication of such processes on people, places and spaces. The chapters in this book were originally published as a Special Issue of the journal Tourism Planning & Development.

Abstract

Overtourism has become a major concern for an increasing number of destinations as tourism numbers continue to grow, stimulated by general economic and technological growth and the expansion of the global middle class. This, coupled with relentless promotion of tourism by many organisations and destinations, has increased tourism, despite growing opposition to excessive development. This book is the first academic volume to deal with this topic and contains chapters by experienced researchers in the tourism field, taking a multidisciplinary approach to review and explain the subject. The introductory section begins with an overview of the current situation and the forces enabling the appearance of overtourism. This is followed by a number of case studies from a range of destinations around the world, both urban and rural, which share the same problems. The concluding section includes a discussion of potential mitigation methods and approaches and a final assessment of future developments. The focus and relevance of this book are not just for academics, as it offers insights into destinations, enablers and solutions for how to address the issue of overtourism on a wide variety of scales. This book offers globally relevant perspectives on destinations as varied as Venice and Barcelona, that have gained global media attention, as well as less publicised rural areas and developing destinations.

Abstract

"Degrowth in tourism is the voluntary shift to rebuild destinations and local economies where consumption, production and the exploitation of resources are minimal. This book takes steps to address the paucity of combined research on tourism and degrowth by presenting emergent knowledge and research on the dynamics of degrowth from a tourism perspective by presenting cases from different parts of the world"--

Abstract

"Since 2017, the term 'overtourism' has become the buzzword for destinations suffering the strain of tourism. It is a critical issue for the 21st Century and beyond, and to date has only been examined from a tourism industry perspective. This book takes a different stand by investigating overtourism from a tourism education perspective. The recent global COVID-19 pandemic was expected to halt travel and, arguably, overtourism. However, industry experts and researchers share the opinion that instead of declining, overtourism is simply experiencing a shift, with a swarm of 'second home' and domestic travel that is likely to engulf many tourism destinations. Against this backdrop, the issue of overtourism remains relevant and studies on ways to cultivate responsible consumer mindsets to deal with overtourism and other sustainability issues in the tourism industry are called for. This book focuses on education as a transformative and strategic tool to tackle overtourism and related negative impacts. It presents original research on the topics of overtourism, education and sustainability, and puts forward a range of practical and transformative tourism education strategies to mitigate overtourism and to promote the sustainable development of destinations. This book will be of great interest to upper-level students, researchers and academics in tourism, development studies, cultural studies and sustainability, as well as professionals in the field of tourism management"--
