Edward Said, professeur de littérature anglaise et comparée à l'Université Columbia de New York, a refondé l'orientalisme moderne en situant son émergence dans le contexte impérialiste du XIXe siècle, mais selon des coordonnées géographiques et culturelles jugées trop restrictives : le point de vue occidental, limité au Royaume-Uni, à la France et aux États-Unis, sur un Orient circonscrit aux cultures arabo-musulmanes du Proche-Orient.Mettre en relation les concepts d'orientalisme et de comparatisme conduit à se poser la question des interactions entre les deux champs d'études : en quoi l'orientalisme peut-il faire évoluer l'approche comparatiste ? Dans quelle mesure la méthodologie comparatiste peut-elle informer les études orientalistes ? En élargissant le champ de l'orientalisme de l'Espagne mauresque à la Chine, en passant par le Proche et Moyen-Orient et l'Inde, l'ouvrage se propose d'examiner comment la littérature comparée, discipline souvent inquiète et encline à scruter et questionner ses objets, peut faire « bouger » l'orientalisme que Said présente comme figé et trouver dans ce type d'études un moyen de repenser sa méthodologie à l'ère de la mondialisation, où études post-coloniales et globalization studies nouent de nouveaux rapports entre Orient et Occident.

Si cet ouvrage tire son titre principal du célèbre The Empire Writes Back, publié par Bill Ashcroft, Gareth Griffiths et Helen Tiffin en 1989, Ridha Boulaâbi enrichit ici considérablement cette perspective des postcolonial studies par la révélation de la mise en fiction des orientalismes savants ou littéraires anciens par les autrices et les auteurs du XXIe siècle. L'orientalisme de retour au sein de la création littéraire maghrébine, bien après sa déconstruction saïdienne, signifie ici qu'il y a un enjeu pour ces écrivains à en venir à un « orientalisme au pluriel », à des « expériences et des parcours inédits, des figures peu connues », autant de traces d'une mémoire collective à partager et à discuter - d'où le titre principal - en les insérant dans les fictions afin de requalifier des hybridités culturelles, des minorités « invisibilisées » au sein de rapports croisés de domination (race, classe, genre). Grand connaisseur de l'histoire de l'orientalisme et des principales figures intellectuelles des XIXe et XXe siècles l'ayant incarné en Orient comme en Occident, Ridha Boulâabi explique parfaitement pourquoi et comment, dans ses composantes savantes, politiques, littéraires, l'orientalisme revisité est au cœur de la stratégie d'écriture et de discours des écrivains maghrébins les plus contemporains. Les intertextes orientalistes des XIXe et XXe siècles, notamment arabisants, servent à dénoncer des hiérarchies encore imposées et à tenter, pour certaines et certains, de puiser dans les traditions écrites et orales pour une réconciliation postcoloniale des langues et des cultures. This book examines fictional representations of India in novels, plays and poetry produced between the years 1772 to 1823 as historical source material. It uses literary texts as case studies to investigate how Britons residing both in the metropole and in India justified, confronted and imagined the colonial encounter during this period. The study will situate the texts in relation to the shifting colonial context and to the changing attitudes towards India within Britain in general and on the part of Britons who had experience of living in India, such as East India Company men or their wives and daughters, in particular. Moreover, it will analyse how this literature responded to the increasing influence of the subcontinent on metropolitan culture. This book, then, approaches fictional texts as case studies that illuminate trends taking place within Britain such as the growing consumption of Indian-style imported goods and the commoditisation of an Indian aesthetic within British visual culture. Whilst the book will utilise fictional portrayals to comment upon shifts in the relationship between coloniser and colonised and to discuss the cross-cultural influences between the metropole and the colonial periphery, it also outlines how literary production and print capitalism played a part in shaping depictions of the subcontinent and stereotypes of the colonial 'other'. The study will also examine how representations of the subcontinent in British art and scholarship were influenced by metropolitan literary and popular culture. At the same time it will look at how representations by metropolitan authors influenced early-nineteenth century depictions by British authors who resided in India.
