This book presents a collection of expository and research papers on various topics in matrix and operator theory, contributed by several experts on the occasion of Albrecht Böttcher’s 60th birthday. Albrecht Böttcher himself has made substantial contributions to the subject in the past. The book also includes a biographical essay, a complete bibliography of Albrecht Böttcher’s work and brief informal notes on personal encounters with him. The book is of interest to graduate and advanced undergraduate students majoring in mathematics, researchers in matrix and operator theory as well as engineers and applied mathematicians.

This book is devoted to the spectral theory of commutative C*-algebras of Toeplitz operators on the Bergman space and its applications. For each such commutative algebra there is a unitary operator which reduces Toeplitz operators from this algebra to certain multiplication operators, thus providing their spectral type representations. This yields a powerful research tool giving direct access to the majority of the important properties of the Toeplitz operators studied herein, such as boundedness, compactness, spectral properties, invariant subspaces. The presence and exploitation of these spectral type representations forms the core for many results presented in the book. Among other results it contains a criterion of when the algebras are commutative on each commonly considered weighted Bergman space together with their explicit descriptions; a systematic study of Toeplitz operators with unbounded symbols; a clarification of the difference between compactness of commutators and semi-commutators of Toeplitz operators; the theory of Toeplitz and related operators with symbols having more than two limit values at boundary points; and a kind of semi-classical analysis of spectral properties of Toeplitz operators. The book is addressed to a wide audience of mathematicians, from graduate students to researchers, whose primary interests lie in complex analysis and operator theory. .

The purpose of this Brief is to give a quick practical introduction into the subject of Toeplitz operators on Kähler manifolds, via examples, worked out carefully and in detail. Necessary background is included. Several theorems on asymptotics of Toeplitz operators are reviewed and illustrated by examples, including the case of tori and the 2-dimensional sphere. Applications in the context of multisymplectic and hyperkähler geometry are discussed. The book is suitable for graduate students, advanced undergraduate students, and any researchers. .

Since the late 1980s, Toeplitz operators and matrices have remained a ?eld of extensive research and the development during the last nearly twenty years is impressive. One encounters Toeplitz matrices in plenty of applications on the one hand, and Toeplitz operators con?rmed their role as the basic elementary building blocks of more complicated operators on the other. Several monographs on Toeplitz and Hankel operators were written d- ing the last decade. These include Peller’s grandiose book on Hankel ope- tors and their applications and Nikolski’s beautiful easy reading on operators, functions, and systems, with emphasis on topics connected with the names of Hardy, Hankel, and Toeplitz. They also include books by the authors together withHagen,Roch,Yu.Karlovich,Spitkovsky,Grudsky,andRabinovich.Thus, results, techniques, and developments in the ?eld of Toeplitz operators are now well presented in the monographic literature. Despite these competitive works, we felt that large parts of the ?rst edition of the present monograp- whichismeanwhileoutofstock-havenotlosttheirfascinationandrelevance. Moreover, the ?rst edition has received a warm reception by many colleagues and became a standard reference. This encouraged us to venture on thinking about a second edition, and we are grateful to the Springer Publishing House for showing an interest in this.

Schur analysis originates with an 1917 article of Schur where he associated to a function, which is analytic and contractive in the open unit disk, a sequence, finite or infinite, of numbers in the open unit disk, called Schur coefficients. In signal processing, they are often named reflection coefficients. Under the word "Schur analysis" one encounters a variety of problems related to Schur functions, such as interpolation problems, moment problems, the study of the relationships between the Schur coefficients and the properties of the function, or the study of underlying operators. Such questions are also considered for some generalizations of Schur functions. Furthermore, there is an extension of the notion of a Schur function for functions that are analytic and have a positive real part in the open upper half-plane; these functions are called Carathéodory functions. This volume is almost entirely dedicated to the analysis of Schur and Carathéodory functions and to the solutions of problems for these classes.

The theory of Toeplitz operators has come to resemble more and more in recent years the classical theory of pseudodifferential operators. For instance, Toeplitz operators possess a symbolic calculus analogous to the usual symbolic calculus, and by symbolic means one can construct parametrices for Toeplitz operators and create new Toeplitz operators out of old ones by functional operations. If P is a self-adjoint pseudodifferential operator on a compact manifold with an elliptic symbol that is of order greater than zero, then it has a discrete spectrum. Also, it is well known that the asymptotic behavior of its eigenvalues is closely related to the behavior of the bicharacteristic flow generated by its symbol. It is natural to ask if similar results are true for Toeplitz operators. In the course of answering this question, the authors explore in depth the analogies between Toeplitz operators and pseudodifferential operators and show that both can be viewed as the "quantized" objects associated with functions on compact contact manifolds.
