Abstract

Edited by Dr. Marc Neff, Passing the General Surgery Oral Board Exam, Second Edition helps candidates prepare for the General Surgery Oral Board Exam in a different way than other review books. In addition to covering concepts frequently addressed on the test, the review also alerts you to "common curveballs" and "strikeouts"– the unexpected problems or seemingly benign actions (or inactions) that could result in a missed diagnosis or misdiagnosis, and thus result in failure to pass the exam. Fully updated and expanded to reflect the many changes in standards of care, this unique study guide is the first to expose the potential traps and pitfalls of the exam by providing examples of how the questions may be asked and what not to say in response.   Designed to be used in conjunction with medical textbooks and other study guides, Passing the General Surgery Oral Board Exam, Second Edition prepares candidates to think on their feet and answer exam questions confidently and accurately. It is an essential guide for surgical residents, fellows across the surgical subspecialties, and practicing surgeons who are board eligible.

Abstract

We regret to inform you that you were not successful in the Certifying Examination… It was the consensus of your examiners that your performance during the examination was not of the level required for certification. That’s the way the letter reads if you do not pass the General Surgery Oral Exam. In order to avoid being among the roughly 20% of test takers who receive this letter, it is important to know what to anticipate and how to prepare for this final test that leads to board certification. Passing the General Surgery Oral Board Exam, compiled by Dr. Marc Neff, helps candidates prepare for the experience in a different way than other review books. In addition to covering concepts frequently addressed on the test, it also alerts you to "common curveballs" and "strikeouts"– the unexpected problems or seemingly benign actions (or inactions) that could result in a missed diagnosis or misdiagnosis, and thus result in failure to pass the exam. This is the first study guide to expose the potential traps and pitfalls of the General Surgery Oral Board Exam by providing examples of how the questions may be asked and what not to say in response. Designed to be used in conjunction with medical textbooks and other study guides, Passing the General Surgery Oral Board Exam prepares candidates to think on their feet and answer exam questions confidently and accurately.

Abstract

In pathology education within North America, there exists a wide gap in the pedagogy between medical school and residency. The pathology intern often comes into residency painfully unprepared. The Practice of Surgical Pathology: A beginner’s guide to the Diagnostic Process lays the foundation of practical pathology and provides a scaffold on which to build a knowledge base. It includes basic introductory material and progresses through each organ system. Diana Weedman Molavi, MD, PhD, is affiliated with the Department of Pathology, Sinai Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland.

Abstract

Written by leaders in the field, Common Surgical Diseases: An Algorithmic Approach to Problem Solving, provides surgical residents and house staff with a current, concise and algorithmic approach to frequently encountered clinical challenges. Over 100 chapters detail every common surgical disease in the form of a succinct text coupled with a step-by-step algorithm. Each chapter walks the reader through the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of the most common surgical problems. Thoroughly updated and revised, the second edition includes new chapters in trauma, abdominal surgery, and critical care. Among the new chapters, readers will find: traumatic hematuria, knee dislocation, hip fractures, extremity fractures, indications for renal and liver transplantation, management of cardiac arrhythmias, ventilator management, hypoxia and pulmonary embolism, and the hypertensive postoperative patient. Following the success of the first edition, this revision provides an excellent quick reference and is an absolute essential for practicing surgeons, surgical house staff, and for medical students in their surgical clerkship.

Abstract

‘Radiology for Surgeons in Clinical Practice’ is aimed at surgeons both consultants and those in training who are interested in the advancing role played by imaging technology within surgical decision making. The prevalence of imaging technology in both the diagnosis and management of surgical patients has increased dramatically in recent years. The increased availability and combination of different imaging modalities have greatly improved the ability of obtaining rapid and accurate diagnoses. Cross-sectional imaging is now widely available and is routinely used to evaluate patients who potentially require surgery. Similarly, multi-detector CT plays a vital role in the management of acute surgical patients. It is therefore essential that the surgeons have a fundamental knowledge of the imaging findings of the main surgical pathologies. This book is organised in two sections, with the first part describing the principles of imaging, and the different imaging techniques available to the surgeon. The advantages and disadvantages of each technique are also highlighted providing useful information and guidance to the surgeon on the appropriate choice of imaging. The second part of the book is symptom-based rather than organ-based, with the aim of providing a practical hands-on approach to imaging patients with common surgical complaints. Written by leading experts in the field, this book will help the surgeon to better understand the imaging options available to them, and choose the correct modalities using a problem-based approach.

Abstract

This book demonstrates clearly how to perform a clinical examination in the infant or child who has a surgical condition. Most textbooks of pediatric surgery focus on the pathological classification and overall management of disease, rather than the practical details of how a diagnosis is made. Yet, in clinical practice, experienced physicians and surgeons usually use a problem-oriented approach to clinical diagnosis. Surprisingly, this is rarely taught to students. The authors attempt to redress this imbalance by providing a clinical approach to the patient which can be learned with a minimum of factual information. The book should therefore remain useful to the practitioner throughout his or her medical career. It includes detailed coverage of the usual presentations of common diseases, but does not attempt to cover all aspects of the presentations of uncommon diseases unless their recognition is important for the well-being or survival of the child. Generally illustrated, this is a book for all who are learning the art of pediatric surgical diagnosis.

Abstract

"The academic Hospital Medicine Faculty at Washington University perform well over 1000 bedside procedures per year, the vast majority of which are performed in a teaching capacity. I serve as Director of our Procedure Service, a rotation where interns and residents are supervised performing a variety of invasive procedures. This book is meant to serve as a comprehensive, hands-on guide to performing bedside procedures. We chose procedures commonly performed by most housestaff, but especially those in Internal Medicine or Surgery, or those who are enrolled in a preliminary or transitional internship"--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

Radiologic evaluation of an infant or child suspected of having a surgical disease can be a complex problem. With this volume, the editors have created a book focused on pediatric imaging written by pediatricians, pediatric surgeons and pediatric radiologists. This book is a collection of over 200 case reports. The concept is a case study approach: The reader is given radiologic images (plain radiography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasonography, etc.) and the clinical history of the patient. On the basis of this information, the reader is asked to identify a diagnostic and therapeutic strategy. Each case is complemented by information on the disease affecting the patient and the management of the case shown, including therapy and follow-up. This educational text is targeted at all medical professionals faced with a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic problems affecting infants and children.
