Enabling informationinteroperability, fostering legal knowledge usability and reuse, enhancinglegal information search, in short, formalizing the complexity of legalknowledge to enhance legal knowledge management are challenging tasks, forwhich different solutions and lines of research have been proposed. During the last decade, research and applicationsbased on the use of legal ontologies as a technique to represent legalknowledge has raised a very interesting debate about their capacity andlimitations to represent conceptual structures in the legal domain. Makingconceptual legal knowledge explicit would support the development of a web oflegal knowledge, improve communication, create trust and enable and supportopen data, e-government and e-democracy activities. Moreover, this explicitknowledge is also relevant to the formalization of software agents (bots), andthe shaping of virtual institutions and multi-agent systems or environments. This book exploresthe use of ontologies in legal knowledge representation forsemantically-enhanced legal knowledge systems or web-based applications. In it,current methodologies, tools and languages used for ontology development arerevised, and the book includes an exhaustive revision of existing ontologies inthe legal domain. The development of the Ontology of Professional JudicialKnowledge (OPJK) is presented as a case study.

Practical Ontologies for Information Professionals provides an accessible introduction and exploration of ontologies and demonstrates their value to information professionals. More data and information is being created than ever before. Ontologies, formal representations of knowledge with rich semantic relationships, have become increasingly important in the context of today's information overload and data deluge. The publishing and sharing of explicit explanations for a wide variety of conceptualizations, in a machine readable format, has the power to both improve information retrieval and discover new knowledge. Information professionals are key contributors to the development of new, and increasingly useful, ontologies.

Aimed at students and professionals within Library and Information Services (LIS), this book is about the power and potential of ontologies to enhance the electronic search process. The book will compare search strategies and results in the current search environment and demonstrate how these could be transformed using ontologies and concept searching. Simple descriptions, visual representations, and examples of ontologies will bring a full understanding of how these concept maps are constructed to enhance retrieval through natural language queries. Readers will gain a sense of how ontologies

The originality of this book, which deals with such a new subject matter, lies in the application of methods and concepts never used before - such as ontologies and taxonomies, as well as thesauri - to the ordering of knowledge based on primary information. Chapters in the book also examine the study of ontologies, taxonomies and thesauri from the perspective of systematics and general systems theory. Ontologies, Taxonomies and Thesauri in Systems Science and Systematics will be extremely useful to those operating within the network of related fields, which includes documentation and informati

Managing ontologies and annotated data throughout their life-cycles is at the core of semantic systems of all kinds. Ontology Management, an edited volume by senior researchers in the field, provides an up-to-date, concise and easy-to-read reference on this topic. This volume describes relevant tasks, practical and theoretical challenges, limitations and methodologies, plus available software tools. The editors discuss integrating the conceptual and technical dimensions with a business view on using ontologies, by stressing the cost dimension of ontology engineering and by providing guidance on how up-to-date tooling helps to build, maintain, and use ontologies. Also included is a one-stop reference on all aspects of managing ontological data and best practices on ontology management for a number of application domains. Ontology Management is designed as a reference or secondary text for researchers and advanced-level students interested in the Semantic Web, Semantic Web Services (SWS)and Web Services, information systems, data and knowledge engineering, ontologies, or other aspects of semantic systems. Practitioners in industry will find this work invaluable as well. Foreword by Professor Dieter Fensel, DERI, University of Innsbruck. .
