Cette étude présente les résultats d'une recherche sur l'unité du sacrement de l'ordre voulue par réforme du Pontifical des ordinations de 1968. On y trouve une analyse de la constitution apostolique Sacramentum ordinis de Pie XII et de la constitution dogmatique Lumen gentium de Vatican II qui conduisirent à une présentation unitaire du sacrement de l'ordre. Puis, à partir des schémas du Consilium sur les ordinations, la recherche procède à une lecture critique du Pontificale romanum de 1962 à la lumière des pratiques liturgiques plus anciennes et de l'enseignement de Vatican II, afin d'identifier les fondements du Pontifical rénové. En s'appuyant sur les archives des expers, différentes séquences rituelles - élection, examen des candidats, rites complémentaires - sont analysées pour montrer les objectifs, les méthodes et les résultats du travail du Cœtus XX. Au terme de la recherche, il apparaît que le Pontifical publié par Paul VI témoigne de l'unité liturgique du sacrement de l'ordre, mais qu'on n'y trouve pas exprimées les raisons théologiques qui ont motivé ce choix. En annexe sont présentés tous les schémas du Consilium concernant la réforme des ordinations de 1968 ainsi que d'autres documents essentiels pour illustrer la recherche.
