Abstract

Metastatic Carcinomas of Unknown Origin, by Mark R. Wick, MD, is the first comprehensive, fully illustrated discussion of the clinical features, pathologic attributes, and treatment approaches of metastatic carcinomas of unknown origin (MCUOs). More than 30,000 cases of MCUOs are identified in the United States each year, and since treatment plans for tumors are predicated largely on their primary sites, management can be especially difficult. This unique text provides a framework for approaching these complex issues, with contributions from international experts in the field of MCUOs. T

Abstract

This pocket book offers a rapid and concise overview of the utility of PET/CT in the management of patients with cancer of unknown primary (CUP). Readers will gain an appreciation of the unique information provided by PET/CT on the molecular and metabolic changes associated with CUP, which can occur in the absence of corresponding anatomical alterations. Characteristic imaging appearances are documented with the aid of a series of teaching cases that serve to illustrate the potential improvements in patient management that may be achieved through early use of PET/CT in the diagnostic pathway. In addition, the relation of the clinical and pathological background to imaging is explained. The book is published within the Springer series Clinicians’ Guides to Radionuclide Hybrid Imaging (compiled under the auspices of the British Nuclear Medicine Society) and will be an excellent asset for all clinicians, nuclear medicine physicians, radiologists, radiographers, and nurses who routinely work in multidisciplinary teams involved in the management of these patients.

Abstract

This book presents an up-to-date and thorough overview of cancer of unknown primary, encompassing topics ranging from epidemiology, tumor biology, and prognostic factors through to the most recent diagnostic and therapeutic advances. All aspects of management are covered, including radiological, nuclear medicine, and pathological diagnosis, site-specific therapies, platinum-based combination chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and novel targeted treatments. Clear guidance is offered on diagnosis of the tissue of origin by means of gene expression and micro-RNA analyses and its therapeutic implications. Detailed directions are also provided on the identification of subsets of patients with a more favorable prognosis, in whom specific treatment offers the chance of long-term survival or even cure. Readers will find Cancer of Unknown Primary to be an ideal source of practically oriented information that will assist in delivery of the best possible care for patients with this challenging diagnosis.  .
