Abstract

Abstract

Introduces the centuries-old history of Muslim communities in Eastern EuropeThe history and contemporary situation of Muslim communities in Eastern Europe are explored here from three angles. First, survival, telling of the resilience of these Muslim communities in the face of often restrictive state policies and hostile social environments, especially during the Communist period. Next, their subsequent revival in the aftermath of the Cold War, and last, transformation, looking at the profound changes currently taking place in the demographic composition of the communities and in the forms of Islam practised by them. The reader is shown a picture of the general trends common to the Muslim communities of Eastern Europe, and the special characteristics of clusters of states, such as the Baltics, the Balkans, the Višegrad states, and the European states of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).Key FeaturesPlaces Muslim communities of Eastern Europe within their historical and pan-European context, establishing them as belonging in and to EuropeProvides an overview of the history and current trends in Muslim communities in 21 post-Communist Eastern European countriesAnalyses the situation of Muslim communities in Eastern Europe on a country-cluster basis (North-Eastern Europe: Russia, Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Belarus, Moldova; the successor states of Yugoslavia: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Slovenia, Croatia; South-Eastern Europe: Albania, Bulgaria, Romania; Central Europe: Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia)Provides an overview of the emerging trends in conversion to Islam among Eastern Europeans

Abstract

Abstract

A critical exploration of the human body in Eastern European and Russian filmBringing together a range of theoretical and critical approaches, this edited collection is the first book to examine representations of the body in Eastern European and Russian cinema after the Second World War. Drawing on the history of the region, as well as Western and Eastern scholarship on the body, the book focuses on three areas: the traumatized body, the body as a site of erotic pleasure, and the relationship between the body and history. Critically dissecting the different ideological and aesthetic ways human bodies are framed, The Cinematic Bodies of Eastern Europe and Russia also demonstrates how bodily discourses oscillate between complicity and subversion, and how they shaped individuals and societies both during and after the period of state socialism.Case studies include:Andrzej Wajda’s War TrilogyBéla Tarr’s SatantangoWiktor GrodeckiIlya Khrzhanovsky’s 4Györgi Pálfi‘s TaxidermiaCzechoslovak New WaveYugoslav Socialist RealismContributors:Malgorzata Bugaj, University of Edinburgh and the University of StirlingHelena Goscilo, Ohio State UniversityNebojša Jovanović, Central European UniversityHajnal Király, Eötvös Lóránd UniversityEwa Mazierska, University of Central LancashireAlexandar Mihailovic, Hofstra UniversityMatilda Mroz, University of SussexDorota Ostrowska, Birkbeck College, University of LondonElżbieta Ostrowska, University of AlbertaÁgnes Pethő, Sapientia Hungarian University of TransylvaniaDavid Sorfa, University of EdinburghCalum Watt, King’s College LondonBruce Williams, William Paterson University

Abstract

The epidemic of mass rape in the former Yugoslavia has illustrated once again, and in particularly brutal fashion, the inextricable relationship between national politics, sexual politics, and body politics. The nexus of these three forces is highly charged in any culture, at any time in history, but especially so among cultures in which rapid, even cataclysmic, changes in material realities and national self-conceptions are eroding or overwhelming previously secure boundaries. The postcommunist moment in the so-called Second World--Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union--has dramatically exposed the opportunities and dangers that arise when the political, cultural, and economic foundations of a society are de- and then re-structured. Gender roles and relations, expressions of sexuality or attempts to recontain them, representations of the body, especially the female body, and the larger, cultural meanings it assumes, are particularly marked sites to witness the performance of complex national dramas of crisis and change. This groundbreaking volume turns its attention to the Second World, specifically to such subjects as the birth of the sex media and porn industry in Russia; Russian women and alcoholism; cinema in post-communist Hungary; patriotism and gender in Poland; sexual dissidence in Eastern Europe; and women in the former Yugoslavia. ›[ go to the Genders website ]

Abstract

"How the Wise Men Got to Chelm is the first in-depth study of Chelm literature and its relationship to its literary precursors. By placing literary Chelm and its 'foolish' antecedents in a broader historical context, it shows how they have functioned for over three hundred years as models of society, somewhere between utopia and dystopia. These imaginary foolish towns have enabled writers both to entertain and highlight a variety of societal problems, a function that literary Chelm continues to fulfill in Jewish literature to this day"--Publisher description.
