Abstract

This thesis presents a numerical model capable of simulating offshore wind turbines exposed to extreme loading conditions. External condition-based extreme responses are reproduced by coupling a fully nonlinear wave kinematic solver with a hydro-aero-elastic simulator. First, a two-dimensional fully nonlinear wave simulator is developed. The transient nonlinear free surface problem is formulated assuming the potential theory and a high-order boundary element method is implemented to discretize Laplace's equation. For temporal evolution a second-order Taylor series expansion is used. The code, after validation with experimental data, is successfully adopted to simulate overturning plunging breakers which give rise to dangerous impact loads when they break against wind turbine substructures. Emphasis is then placed on the random nature of the waves. Indeed, through a domain decomposition technique a global simulation framework embedding the numerical wave simulator into a more general stochastic environment is developed. The proposed model is meant as a contribution to meet the more and more pressing demand for research in the offshore wind energy sector as it permits taking into account dangerous effects on the structural response so as to increase the global structural safety level.

Abstract

This monograph deals with Burgers' equation and its generalisations. Such equations describe a wide variety of nonlinear diffusive phenomena, for instance, in nonlinear acoustics, laser physics, plasmas and atmospheric physics. The Burgers equation also has mathematical interest as a canonical nonlinear parabolic differential equation that can be exactly linearised. It is closely related to equations that display soliton behaviour and its study has helped elucidate other such nonlinear behaviour. The approach adopted here is applied mathematical. The author discusses fully the mathematical properties of standard nonlinear diffusion equations, and contrasts them with those of Burgers' equation. Of particular mathematical interest is the treatment of self-similar solutions as intermediate asymptotics for a large class of initial value problems whose solutions evolve into self-similar forms. This is achieved both analytically and numerically.

Abstract

"We consider the gravity water waves system with a periodic one-dimensional interface in infinite depth and we establish the existence and the linear stability of small amplitude, quasi-periodic in time, traveling waves. This provides the first existence result of quasi-periodic water waves solutions bifurcating from a completely resonant elliptic fixed point. The proof is based on a Nash-Moser scheme, Birkhoff normal form methods and pseudo differential calculus techniques. We deal with the combined problems of small divisors and the fully-nonlinear nature of the equations. The lack of parameters, like the capillarity or the depth of the ocean, demands a refined nonlinear bifurcation analysis involving several nontrivial resonant wave interactions, as the well-known "Benjamin-Feir resonances". We develop a novel normal form approach to deal with that. Moreover, by making full use of the Hamiltonian structure, we are able to provide the existence of a wide class of solutions which are free from restrictions of parity in the time and space variables"--

Abstract

Electrical faults on transmission and distribution lines are detected and isolated by system protective devices. Once the fault has been cleared, outage times can be reduced if the location of the fault can be determined more quickly. The techniques and application considerations for determining the location of a fault on ac transmission and distribution lines are outlined in this guide. Traditional approaches and the primary measurement techniques used in modern devices are reviewed: one- and two-terminal impedance-based methods and traveling-wave methods. Application considerations include: two- and three-terminal lines, series-compensated lines, parallel lines, untransposed lines, underground cables, fault resistance effects, and other power system conditions, including those unique to distribution systems.

Abstract

"As a critical theoretical advance, Understanding plane waves discusses the acoustic Goos-Hänchen effect. The important applications of this effect are discussed, including plane wave propagating inside transversely isotropic elastic-solids, reflection/refraction at interface between two anisotropic rocks, and acoustical applications to petroleum logging and seismic exploration. Next, the authors explore a newly developed acoustic-measurement system with emphasis on measurement process and recent improvements that make an acoustic-measurement more accurate. Three approaches which are used to analyze the evolution of the plane longitudinal and transverse waves that are propagated in a nonlinear hyperelastic medium are discussed : the method of successive approximations, the method of slowly varying amplitudes and the method of restriction on the displacement gradient. Lastly, the subject of relativistic quantum particles interacting with classical plane wave fields is examined from the standpoint of space-time symmetries which have been found to be encoded in the solutions of relativistic equations"--
