"Migratory Settings proposes a shift in perspective from migration as movement from place to place to migration as installing movement within place. Migration not only takes place between places, but also has its effects on place, in place. In brief, we suggest a view on migration in which place is neither reified nor transcended, but 'thickened' as it becomes the setting of the variegated memories, imaginations, dreams, fantasies, nightmares, anticipations, and idealizations of both migrants and native inhabitants that experiences of migration bring into contact with each other. Migration makes place overdetermined, turning it into the mise-en-scene of different histories. Hence, movement does not lead to placelessness, but to the intensification and overdetermination of place, its 'heterotopicality.' At the same time, place does not unequivocally authenticate or validate knowledge, but, shot-through with the transnational and the transcultural, exceeds it ceaselessly. Our contributions take us to the migratory settings of a fictional exhibition; a staged political wedding; a walking tour in a museum; African appropriations of Shakespeare and Sophocles; Gollwitz, Germany; Calais, France; the body after a heart transplant; refugees' family portraiture; a garden in Vermont; the womb. This book traces the artistic trajectories of Djuna Barnes and Jane Bowles, examining their literary representations of the nomadic ethic pervading the twentieth-century expatriate movements in and out of America. The book argues that these authors contribute to the nomadic aesthetic of American modernism: its pastoral ideographies, (post)colonial ecologies, as well as regional and transcultural varieties. Mapping the pastoral moment in different temporalities and spaces (Barnes representing the 1920s expatriation in Europe while Bowles comments on the 1940s exodus to Mexico and North Africa), this book suggests that Barnes and Bowles counter the critical trend associating American modernity primarily with urban spaces, and instead locate the nomadic thrust of their times in the (post)colonial history of the American frontier.

On taxe souvent les romancières contemporaines de langue française d’intimisme, de clôture narrative sur la sphère du privé et du corporel, ou encore de focalisation sur l’affect, le familial et le psychique. Pourtant, que ce soit d’un point de vue textuel, générique, social ou politique, cette réduction de la littérature contemporaine féminine à l’auto-enfermement ne rend pas compte d’un champ créatif beaucoup plus complexe. De fait, les reformulations du genre romanesque et le travail sur la langue fluidifient les frontières symboliques traditionnelles, tandis que les déclassements par le haut ou le bas, les métissages identitaires et les traversées d’espaces géographiques, corporels ou politiques indexent un nomadisme généralisé. Enfin, les tentatives de reconfigurations de pratiques éditoriales et critiques séculairement focalisées sur les productions masculines ou franco-françaises signalent un questionnement des enjeux de pouvoir. Pour mettre au jour l’ensemble de ces déplacements, quatre écrivaines ont proposé également des inédits sur leur conception personnelle du nomadisme littéraire : Régine Detambel, Annie Ernaux, Pierrette Fleutiaux et Vénus Khoury-Ghata.
