Just after the Latin, the IX th century, the French language was written in a prominent and context for political purposes (Oaths of Strasbourg, 842); it is singularly early. A grandson of Charlemagne, a diplomatic prince, a Latinist warrior, had the idea of his written use; Nithard is the inventor of the French language. He was also the first writer: French literature was born of his sorrow. The rise of French and its Letters owes so much to Nithard, to whom the centuries have been ungrateful with constancy.
