La haine de Mai 68 est devenue un thème à la mode. Le slogan de Nicolas Sarkozy, lors de la campagne présidentielle de 2007, sur l'indispensable liquidation du legs de 68, ne doit donc pas être réduit à un propos de campagne. Il s'appuie en réalité sur un travail idéologique qui a commencé dès les lendemains des événements et qui s'est poursuivi de commémoration en commémoration, jusqu'à devenir une vulgate à la fin des années 1990.Faut-il voir, dans cette fièvre anti-68, une simple « rhétorique réactionnaire » ? Quelles en sont les origines ? Quarante après, Mai 68 méritait-il de tels réquisitoires ?Pour répondre à ces questions, ce livre reconstitue la généalogie intellectuelle de ce discours. L'auteur montre ainsi comment Mai 68 n'a cessé d'être attaqué depuis des bords politiques opposés, de la droite extrême à la gauche communiste. Il souligne aussi que ce long procès s'est accompagné de profondes mutations dans le monde intellectuel, marqué par une contre-offensive libérale et conservatrice, une réaffirmation de « l'humanisme » et un retour au mythe républicain. Il montre enfin que cette entreprise de liquidation, justifiant un retour à des positions conservatrices, s'est accomplie à partir d'interprétations erronées de Mai 68.La Pensée anti-68 offre ainsi, pour la première fois, une discussion d'ensemble de tout un pan de la pensée française qui a voulu tourner la page des « maîtres à penser » des années 1960.
