Dans la plaine du Nil, pendant des millénaires avant notre ère, s'est développée une grande civilisation. Il y eut alors communication intelligente entre l'homme, la terre et l'eau. De Narmer à Nasser, l'auteur évoque cette trilogie riche en réalisations et symboles et il souligne les ambitions parfois démesurées des lointains successeurs des pharaons. Ceux-ci pensaient détenir le monopole des eaux du fleuve ; ainsi en était-il encore récemment dans la plaine : Sadate menaça de guerre le successeur du Négus s'il touchait aux eaux du Nil bleu. Pour emmagasiner à jamais ces eaux, le haut barrage, au lendemain de la nationalisation du canal, fut défi au monde occidental et rupture avec la grande intelligence hydraulique des pharaons : l'auteur montre qu'un barrage plus modeste, à l'amont, eut suffi, épargnant le basse Nubie et ses temples, les crues étant rejetées latéralement dans la dépression de Tochkla déjà bien connue des pharaons. Erreur de conception tardivement reconnue, puisque c'est dans ce site que sont depuis peu rejetées les crues du fleuve. Du même coup, Tochkla est devenu point de départ d'une nouvelle vallée, celle des oasis. Vallée de l'espoir pour les égyptiens, mais pour les pays d'amont, vallée de la colère parce que gouffre d'eau. Ils menacent de développer des irrigations tout au long du fleuve retenant l'eau qui arrose la plaine d'Égypte : le lac Nasser deviendra une sorte de mer d'Aral aux eaux de plus en plus basses découvrant un envasement déjà abondant et l'Égypte, renonçant à sa nouvelle vallée, verra dépérir son agriculture. Sera-ce alors la guerre de l'eau dans la vallée de nos ancêtres ? Le sapiens spaiens cheminant vers des terres inconnues était rempli d'espérance : ses descendants de plus en plus nombreux se demandent avec angoisse si le fleuve pourra étancher leur soif. Le salut de l'Égypte, pense l'auteur, est dans l'aménagement hydraulique des chutes du Nil bleu, source d'énergie et d'eau abondante au long de l'année au sein d'une action fédérée groupant Éthiopie, Nord-Soudan et Égypte.

Although Herodot's dictum that "Egypt is a gift of the Nile" is proverbial, there has been only scant attention to the way the river impacted on ancient Egyptian society. Egyptologists frequently focus on the textual and iconographic record, whereas archaeologists and earth scientists approach the issue from the perspective of natural sciences. The contributions in this volume bridge this gap by analyzing the river both as a natural and as a cultural phenomenon. Adopting an approach of cultural ecology, it addresses issues like ancient land use, administration and taxation, irrigation, and religious concepts.
