Abstract

Although 'Theologies of the Old Testament' continue to proliferate, most of these do not interact with the many recent studies of Israelite religion that have appeared. Drawing on archaeology and other ancient Near Eastern material, these studies present a reconstruction of religious life in ancient Israel that ought to be of some importance for the theological interpretation of the biblical text. This collection of essays integrates reconstructions of ancient Israelite religious practice into theologically-oriented interpretation of the Old Testament. In essays ranging from discussion of Sumerian hymns to early Iron Age incense burners, respected biblical scholars and archaeologists provide new insights into the biblical theology of the Christian Bible.

Abstract

Paul Gerson Unna’s “Abtropfung” theory that nevi develop through migration of nevus cells from the epidermis to the dermis prevailed for almost a century until the “Hochsteigerung” theory postulated the reverse pattern of migration based on newly acquired observations from histopathology and studies of embryogenesis. Most recently, however, new insights gained from epidemiology, cross-sectional and longitudinal studies of nevi, dermoscopy and confocal microscopy, and cellular and molecular studies have brought into question both of the aforementioned theories. This book provides a comprehensive guide to current knowledge about nevogenesis by presenting these latest advances and in addition discusses issues yet to be resolved. It will assist practicing physicians in effectively managing patients with a variety of nevi and will also be of great value to researchers in the field. Importantly, since nevi are associated with an increased risk of melanoma, understanding nevogenesis may help to unravel some of the mysteries of melanomagenesis.

Abstract

Skin inflammation is associated with a wide range of conditions which represent major health issues worldwide. Skin and mucosal surfaces represent the primary interface between the human body and the environment, susceptible to numerous factors whose action results in diseases produced by chemical substances, mechanical trauma, microbial agents, radiation, etc. Inflammation, a complex network of interactions between soluble molecules and cells, represents the main modality of the skin’s response to injuries. Numerous studies have revealed close links between chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and carcinogenesis. Chronic inflammation induces the activation of various cell types and an increase in the production of reactive oxygen species, promoting the initiation of a malignant process. Identifying specific biomarkers is essential for understanding molecular mechanisms and developing therapies appropriate to the patient’s characteristics.Personalized medicine is an emerging field of medicine that has the potential to predict which therapy will be safe and efficacious for specific patients using an individual’s genetic profile to guide decisions regarding the diagnosis, treatment, as well as prevention of disease. This book gathers articles that present recent advancements in research involving the mechanisms that underlie the development of inflammatory skin disorders, skin and mucosal inflammation in general.

Abstract

Melanoma is an increasingly important public health problem. Although the cause of most malignant melanomas – over-exposure to ultraviolet light – is well known, effective treatment has remained challenging. The past several years have been marked by extraordinary developments in melanoma treatment in the arena of targeted therapeutics. This book describes these ground-breaking discoveries and their implications for clinical use. As melanoma biology is increasingly understood, so the development of targeted therapies for this disease is spurred ahead. This book covers both established signal transduction inhibitors and the fascinating emerging realm of molecularly-guided immunotherapies. This benchmark book provides the most up-to-date information on the new breed of melanoma therapies. Composed of the works of major researchers and clinicians, this book offers new insights, novel approaches, and promising data for effective treatment planning. Illuminating the latest advances in the field, it is a solid resource for clinical oncologists, translational scientists, and basic cancer researchers.
