This dissertation by Gunnel Peterson explores mechanical neck muscle function in individuals with persistent pain and disability following whiplash injuries. The work investigates the effects of three different exercise interventions on neck muscle endurance and pain intensity, aiming to improve diagnostic tools and treatment approaches for whiplash-associated disorders (WAD). Utilizing real-time ultrasound imaging, the studies compare neck muscle function between WAD patients and healthy controls. Results indicate that neck-specific exercises, with or without behavioral approaches, improve muscle endurance and decrease pain, suggesting enhanced muscular support for cervical spine stability. The findings offer potential advancements in diagnosing and treating WAD, contributing valuable insights into muscle interactions and adaptations in affected individuals.
