Abstract

The National Organization for Women (NOW), was organized by women to promote equal rights for all women. On May 7, 1969, a group of 100 women, sponsored by NOW, demonstrated in Washington, D.C. outside the White House. The group was demonstrating in support of the "Freedom for Women Week." The organization also furthered their efforts by meeting with Member of Congress and representatives of Government agencies. NOW continued to demonstrate for their cause through the mid 1970's and grew to have organizations in most states.

Abstract

The Rev. Dr. Anna Pauline 'Pauli' Murray (1910-1985) was a trailblazing social activist, writer, lawyer, civil rights organizer, & campaigner for gender rights. In the 1930s & 1940s, she was active in radical left-wing political groups & helped innovate nonviolent protest strategies against segregation that would become iconic in later decades, & in the 1960s, she cofounded the National Organization for Women (NOW). In additions, Murray became the first African American to receive a Yale law doctorate & the first black woman to be ordained an Episcopal priest. Yet, behind her great public successes, Murray battled many personal demons, including bouts of poor physical & mental health, conflicts over her gender & sexual identities, family traumas, & financial difficulties. In this intimate biography, Troy Saxby provides the most comprehensive account of Murray's inner life to date.

Abstract

"How did reproductive justice (defined as the right to have children, to not have children, and to parent) become recognized as a human rights issue? In [this book] Zakiya Luna highlights the often-forgotten activism of women of color who are largely responsible for creating what we now know as the modern-day reproductive justice movement. Focusing on SisterSong, an intersectional reproductive justice organization, Luna shows how, and why, women of color mobilized around reproductive rights in the domestic arena. She examines their key role in re-framing reproductive rights as human rights, raising this set of issues as a priority in the United States, a country hostile to the concept of human rights at home"--
