In this comprehensive study of a common deity found in the ancient Near East as well as many other cultures, Green brings together evidence from the worlds of myth, iconography, and literature in an attempt to arrive at a new synthesis regarding the place of the Storm-god. He finds that the Storm-god was the force primarily responsible for three major areas of human concern: (1) religious power because he was the ever-dominant environmental force upon which peoples depended for their very lives; (2) centralized political power; and (3) continuously evolving sociocultural processes, which typically were projected through the Storm-god's attendants. Green traces these motifs through the Mesopotamian, Anatolian, Syrian, and Levantine regions; with regard to the latter, he argues that Yahweh of the Bible can be identified as a storm-god, though certain unique characteristics came to be associated with him: he was the Creator of all that is created and the self-existing god who needs no other.

"The ties that bind Central Asia to the Middle East have increased dramatically in recent years, as political emancipation from Soviet rule has spurred the restoration of material culture shared by Turkic and Iranian peoples. Political institutions and farming practices, however, are still based on the Soviet model, with centralised large-scale agricultural production serving Russian rather than local needs. The contributors to this volume examine land reform and agricultural development in Russia, Central Asia, North Africa, and the Middle East. Their studies bring into question the evolutionary view of agricultural development, from small-scale subsistence to large-scale commercialised agricultural systems, and emphasise the need to understand the specific political, historical, and geographic contexts of rural development and land reform. Het coronavirus COVID-19 heeft de hele wereld in zijn macht en de psychologische gevolgen ervan zullen niet te overzien zijn. Experten spreken van een ‘tsunami’ van psychische problemen die ons gaat overspoelen. Quarantaine kan het virus weliswaar indijken maar de psychische gevolgen zijn niet te onderschatten. Uit studies blijkt dat mensen die in quarantaine gezeten hebben drie tot vier keer meer klachten kunnen ontwikkelen dan anderen. In afzondering voel je je eenzaam en geïsoleerd van je omgeving, wat voor heel wat stress zorgt. Verwarring, angst, woede en verdriet zijn emoties waarmee je te maken krijgt. Ook gevoelens van machteloosheid, schuldgevoelens, rouw en depressieve gevoelens steken de kop op. Dat zijn normale gevoelens en emoties in een uitzonderlijke situatie. In dit boek krijg je handvatten aangereikt waarmee je zelf acute stress kan aanpakken. Deze technieken vervangen niet de therapie bij een therapeut maar kunnen een duwtje in de rug zijn om jezelf onder controle te houden. Omdat er nog niet meteen een vaccin voorhanden is, zal je bij de eerste symptomen aan ‘zelfquarantaine’ en zelfregulatie moeten doen, waarbij dit boek goed van pas komt.
