Die Arbeit geht von der Beobachtung aus, daß dem Zeichenkomplex der antiken Mysterien und seiner Adaption in einer Mysterientradition eine für die Selbstdeutung der frühromantischen Generation zentrale Rolle zukommt. Die romantische Mysterienmetaphorik dient zur Konturierung eines nicht mythologisch-allgemeinen, sondern exklusiven 'Wissens', das nur in besonderen ästhetischen Redeweisen sagbar ist. Relevant wird die entsprechende Form der Identitätsbestimmung dort, wo rezeptionsgeschichtliche Enttäuschungen, der Einbruch der Revolutionskriege in Deutschland und generelle Einsichten in die Partikularisierung des modernen Wissens und der Gesellschaft zu einer Erschütterung der frühen universalistischen Emphase führen. Die untersuchten kunsttheoretischen Schriften und Dichtungen von Schelling, Schlegel, Schleiermacher, Novalis, Loeben und Eichendorff reflektieren die Einsicht in die eigene Minorität und deuten sie in Formen, die für die gesamte moderne Kunst wegweisend sind (Avantgardestilisierung; Ästhetizismus; Anschluß der Kunst an positive gesellschaftliche Größen wie Staat, Kirche). Um der konnotativen Fülle der romantischen Schriften gerecht zu werden, setzt die Arbeit in der Antike ein und analysiert dort Schriften Platons, der Neuplatoniker und christlicher Denker, die das Sprachfeld Mysterien als Symbolkomplex erschlossen haben. Anschließend werden die unmittelbaren Voraussetzungen der Romantik betrachtet: Denn schon in der Spätaufklärung - und hier wird ausführlich auf das Werk Wielands eingegangen - kommt es zur Reflexion der problematischen Identität als Intellektueller in der Moderne, geraten die Idee einer möglichen Einheit der Gesellschaft und der universalistische Wahrheitsbegriff ins Wanken. Die Arbeit ist ideen- und sozialgeschichtlich ausgerichtet. Sie nimmt Bezug auf die (oft apologetischen) Forschungen zu einer Neuen Mythologie in der Romantik, thematisiert Probleme einer autonom werdenden Kunst und ist auch als Beitrag zu einer Geschichte der Intellektuellen in der Moderne lesbar.

"Nonnus' Paraphrasis, an epic rendition of the Fourth Gospel, offers a highly sophisticated interpretation of the Johannine text. An essential means to this end is extensive use of the imagery related to Greek, and especially Dionysiac, mysteries. Doroszewski successfully challenges the once predominant view that the mystery terminology in the poem is nothing more than rhetorical ornament. He convincingly argues for an important exegetical role Nonnus gives to the mystery terms. On the one hand, they refer to the Mystery of Christ. Jesus introduces his followers into the new dimension of life and worship that enables them to commune with God. This is portrayed as falling into Bacchic frenzy and being initiated into secret rites. On the other hand, the terminology has a polemical function, too, as Nonnus uses it to present the Judaic cult as bearing the hallmarks of pagan mysteries. As the book discusses the Paraphrasis against the background of the mystery metaphor development in antiquity, it serves as an excellent introduction to this key feature of the ancient mentality and will appeal to all interested in the culture of Imperial times, especially in Early Christianity, Patristics, Neoplatonism and Late Antique poetry"
