Myocarditis, the inflammation of the heart muscle, could be in some cases serious and potentially fatal disease. This book is a comprehensive compilation of studies from leading international experts on various aspects of myocarditis. The first section of the book provides a clinical perspective on the disease. It contains comprehensive reviews of the causes of myocarditis, its classification, diagnosis, and treatment. It also includes reviews of Perimyocarditis; Chagas' chronic myocarditis, and myocarditis in HIV-positive patients. The second section of the book focuses on the pathogenesis of myocarditis, discussing pathways and mechanisms activated during viral infection and host immune response during myocarditis. The third, and final, section discusses new findings in the pathogenesis that may lead to new directions for clinical diagnosis, including use of new biomarkers, and new treatments of myocarditis.

Myocarditis is a clinical syndrome, most frequently of infectious etiology, that occurs with a broad range of relatively non-specific symptoms, and consists of an inflammatory process of the heart with necrosis and degeneration of the myocardium by inflammatory infiltration of immune cells. The infection can cause direct injury of cardiomyocytes as well as immune-mediated destruction of the myocardium, leading to cardiac dysfunction. In this book, the broad aspects of myocarditis are fully presented by leading international experts. The texts are devoted to both clinical aspects and pathophysiology, and they present comprehensive reviews of the causes of myocarditis, its classification, diagnosis, and treatment, as well as myocarditis in special populations such as pediatric, peripartum and chronic chagasic myocarditis.

This book is an up-to-date, comprehensive, clinically oriented guide to the diagnosis and treatment of patients with myocarditis. The opening chapters address the classification, histopathology and molecular diagnosis, as well as the polymorphic clinical presentations, ranging from myocardial infarction with normal coronary arteries; arrhythmias of variable type and clinical severity and fulminant, acute, sub-acute or chronic heart failure; to life-threatening unexplained cardiogenic shock and sudden cardiac death. Including chapters from leading International experts in the field, it covers all key issues from bench to bedside. Topics presented include epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, clinical and diagnostic work-up, the role of endomyocardial biopsy and of non-invasive cardiac imaging, risk stratification, and cardiological and etiology-specific management and follow-up. For each topic, a comprehensive review of the current literature is provided and practical suggestions are offered for short- and long-term management. Lastly, future perspectives and gaps in the current knowledge are also addressed. The book also covers a key discovery of last the 2 decades, namely the autoimmune origin of myocarditis in a sizable proportion of patients, discussing in detail the role of immunosuppression and immunomodulation, as well as the need for a multidisciplinary approach to the disease. Mainly intended for cardiologists, general physicians, clinical immunologists and rheumatologists, it is also a valuable tool for residents in Cardiology, Internal Medicine, Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology.

This comprehensive book serves as a guide in the day-to-day management of patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM), with a particular emphasis on adult dermatomyositis (DM), polymyositis (PM), juvenile dermatomyositis, necrotizing myositis, and inclusion body myositis. Practical in nature, it presents IIM concepts in a straightforward fashion, with high-quality figures, algorithms, and flowcharts supplementing each of the expertly authored chapters. The book begins with an introduction to myositis, providing an overview of the myositis basics and what type of patient is affected. Subsequent chapters are organized by the sequence in which a physician often manages myositis, from initial presentation and workup, to diagnosis, treatment, and finally prognostic and long-term outcome factors. The key differentials in various diagnostic studies are thoroughly examined, including electromyography, muscle biopsy, and MRI. Managing Myositis: A Practical Guide is an easy to-read, indispensable resource for internists, rheumatologists, dermatologists, pulmonologists, and neurologists.
