"For more than a millennium, Islam has been a vital part of Western civilization. Today, however, it is sometimes assumed that Islam is a foreign element inside the West, and even that Islam and the West are doomed to be in perpetual conflict. The need for accurate, reliable scholarship on this topic has never been more urgent. The Bloomsbury Reader on Islam in the West brings together some of the most important, up-to-date scholarly writings published on this subject. The Reader explores not only the presence of Muslim religious practitioners in Europe and the Americas but also the impact of Islamic ideas and Muslims on Western politics, societies, and cultures. It is ideal for use in the university classroom, with an extensive introduction by Edward E. Curtis IV and a timeline of key events in the history of Islam in the West. A brief introduction to the author and the topic is provided at the start of each excerpt. Part 1, on the history of Islam in the West, probes the role of Muslims and the significance of Islam in medieval, early modern, and modern settings such as Islamic Spain, colonial-era Latin America, sixteenth-century France, nineteenth-century Crimea, interwar Albania, the post-World War II United States, and late twentieth-century Germany. Part 2 focuses on the contemporary West, examining debates over Muslim citizenship, the war on terrorism, anti-Muslim prejudice, and Islam and gender, while also providing readers with a concrete sense of how Muslims practise and live out Islamic ideals in their private and public lives"-- "For more than a millennium, Islam has been a vital part of Western civilization.

In both Europe and North America, organizations tracing their origins back to the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamist movements have rapidly evolved into multifunctional, richly funded organizations. They now compete to become the major representatives of Western Muslim communities and government interlocutors. Some analysts and policy makers see these organizations as positive forces encouraging integration. Others treat them as modern-day Trojan horses that feign moderation while radicalizing Western Muslims. Lorenzo Vidino brokers a third and more informed view. Having completed more than

“The words Islam and volunteering rarely go in tandem, especially in the West. This book proves how wrong we are. From Australia to America, the chapters demonstrate the scope and intricacies of Muslim diaspora volunteering. A must read for anyone interested in the intersection of religion and volunteering.” — Ram A. Cnaan, Professor and Director, Program for Religion and Social Policy Research, University of Pennsylvania, USA “This book identifies the ways in which religious Muslimness is akin to participatory citizenship in the secular sense. The collection is a significant contribution to a discussion in relation to the norms and values that Muslims derive from readings within Islam.”—Tahir Abbas, Assistant Professor at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs, Leiden University, The Netherlands “This volume opens an important conversation on the nature and multiple ethical configurations of Islamic volunteering in the West, as it is caught between various political, secular and security constraints. The contributions offer important insights into how Muslim activists navigate these different constraints, thereby raising important questions on citizenship, solidarity and ethical self-making.” —Nadia Fadil, Associate Professor, KU Leuven, Belgium This edited volume explores various facets of Muslims’ civic engagement in Western post-secular societies, fundamentally challenging simplistic boundaries between Islamic ethical conduct and liberal-democratic norms and practice. Bringing together scholars from sociology, anthropology, and Islamic theology, the collection offers sound theoretical and empirical elaborations on the complex ways in which Islamic piety, principles and norms interact with, and shape, Muslims’ everyday practice of volunteering as a performance of active citizenship in liberal societies. The contributions cover diverse manifestations of Muslim volunteering in North America, Europe and Australia, from environmentalism to mental health volunteering, and critically examine the national and global socio-political context within which certain forms of Muslims’ civic engagement are viewed with skepticism and suspicion. It will be of use to students and scholars across sociology, political science, community studies and Islamic studies, with a focus on migrant integration, diaspora studies, and inter-ethnic relations.

"State, Religion and Muslims: Between Discrimination and Protection at the Legislative, Executive and Judicial Levels brings together the academics from different academic disciplines and offers an in-depth analysis of discrimination against Muslims in western countries affecting them in specific areas of life. The volume provides a comprehensive look at the legislative, executive and judicial dimensions of discrimination across the 12 Western countries situating discriminatory practices in their institutional framework with a multidisciplinary look. Exploring the most formidable aspects of the discrimination against Muslims - education, employment, exercise of religion, state relations with religious communities and hate crime and hate speech - the volume illustrates that the individual, structural and institutional discrimination against Muslims living in western countries has become a routine".

The Muslim Brotherhood in the West remains a mysterious entity. In The Closed Circle, Lorenzo Vidino offers an unprecedented inside view into how one of the world’s most influential Islamist groups operates. He marshals unique interviews with prominent former members and associates from Europe, the United Kingdom, and North America, shedding light on why and how people join and leave Western outfits of the Muslim Brotherhood.Drawing on these striking personal accounts, Vidino weaves together the experiences of individuals who participated in and later renounced Brotherhood groups. Their perspectives provide a wealth of new information about the Brotherhood’s secretive inner workings and the networks that connecting the small yet highly organized cluster of Brotherhood-influenced groups. The Closed Circle examines the tactics the Brotherhood uses to recruit and retain participants as well as how and why individuals make the difficult decision to leave. Through the stories of diverse former members, Vidino paints a portrait of a highly structured, tight-knit movement. His unprecedented access and understanding of the group’s activities and motivations has significant policy implications concerning Western Brotherhood organizations and also illuminates the underlying mechanisms found in a range of extremist groups.
