Abstract

How does learning happen in the context of project organisations? And how can the organisation of a project develop against this backdrop? The example of two music events shows how competence development can take place beyond change management and personnel policy as a prerequisite for organisational development.

Abstract

This book has an original focus and is structured in two parts: the first discusses broad issues affecting music festivals globally, especially in the context of rural revitalisation. The second part looks in more detail at a range of types of festivals commonly found throughout North America, Europe and Australasia, such as country music, jazz, opera and alternative music festivals. The authors draw on in-depth research undertaken over the past five years in a range of Australian places and makes clear conclusions on their significance for rural and regional change

Abstract

This is the first book whose subject is the music, sounds and silences of Antarctica. From 2011 until 2014, Australia marked its long-standing connection with Antarctica by celebrating the centenary of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition. The icy continent, with its extremes of climate and environment and unique soundscapes, offers great potential for creative achievements in the world of music and sound. This book demonstrates the intellectual and creative engagement of artists, musicians, scientists and writers. Consciousness of sounds -- in particular, musical ones -- has not been at the forefront of our aims in polar endeavours, but listening to and appreciating them has been as important there as elsewhere.

Abstract

Contemporary music, like other arts, is dealing with the rise of »curators« laying claim to everything from festivals to playlists - but what are they and what do they do anyway? Drawing from backgrounds ranging from curatorial studies to festival studies and musicology, Brandon Farnsworth lays out a theory for understanding curatorial practices in contemporary music, and how they could be a solution to the field's diminishing social relevance. The volume focuses on two case studies, the Munich Biennale for New Music Theatre, and the Maerzmusik Festival at the Berliner Festspiele, putting them in a transdisciplinary history of curatorial practice, and showing what music curatorial practice can be.

Abstract

Music festivals have become important events for people to experience music collectively and take a break from their everyday lives. Companies and institutions like to use music festivals as opportunities for advertising their products and services through sponsorship. Dominik Nösner examines professional stakeholder's assessments of the market as well as patterns of existing procedural elements of sponsorship culture, factors determining existing communication and decision-making culture and interrelations between sponsors and audience with emphasis on university popular music festivals. Building on that, he further explores motivational constructs for popular music festival attendance via a survey study.

Abstract

Most histories of nineteenth-century music portray 'the people' merely as an audience, a passive spectator to the music performed around it. Yet, in this reappraisal of choral singing and public culture, Minor shows how a burgeoning German bourgeoisie sang of its own collective aspirations, mediated through the voice of celebrity composers. As both performer and idealized community, the chorus embodied the possibilities and limitations of a participatory, national identity. Starting with the many public festivals at which the chorus was a featured participant, Minor's account of the music written for these occasions breaks new ground not only by taking seriously these often-neglected works, but also by showing how the contested ideals of German nationhood suffused the music itself. In situating both music and festive culture within the milieu of German bourgeois liberals, this study uncovers new connections between music and politics during a century that sought to redefine both spheres.
