Abstract

Music and mathematics have been connected since ancient times. During the twentieth century, however, many composers consciously started using many mathematical concepts, algebraic operations and theorems as bases for their creative processes. The first part of this volume deals with the relationship between music and mathematics in the music of composers such as Olivier Messiaen, Iannis Xenakis, Franco Evangelisti, Pierre Boulez, Arvo Pärt, Steve Reich and Philip Glass. A special section is then dedicated to Spanish composers, ranging from the first serialists and the aleatoric practices of the 50s and 60s (i.e. Juan Hidalgo, Cristöbal Halffter, Luis de Pablo, Carmelo A. Bernaola, Joaquim Homs, and Josep Soler), to those of the last forty years (Francisco Guerrero, Alberto Posada, José Maria Sanchez-Verdu, Iluminada Pérez Frutos, Nuria Gimenez Comas, Helga Arias and José Lopez Montes). The theme continues in the second part of the book through the examination of prominent theories (Neo-Riemannian theory, diatonic set theory, theory of musical kaleidocycles), the use of diagrams and charts in music, the algorithmic evolution of music, contemporary compositional practices inspired by mathematical concepts; it arrives at studies on double canons and trichords. We publish a philosophical study in order to ask what the future of the relationship between music and mathematics will be at the beginning of the 21st century. Includes an introduction by Massimiliano Locanto.

Abstract

This book represents a new approach to musical creativity, dealing with the semiotics, mathematical principles, and software for creativity processes. After a thorough introduction, the book offers a first practical part with a detailed tutorial for students in composition and improvisation, using musical instruments and music software. The second, theoretical part deals with historical, actual, and new principles of creative processes in music, based on the results and methods developed in the first author’s book Topos of Music and referring to semiotics, predicative objects, topos theory, and object-oriented concept architectures. The third part of the book details four case studies in musical creativity, including an analysis of the six variations of Beethoven's sonata op. 109, a discussion of the creative process in a CD coproduced in 2011 by the first and second authors, a recomposition of Boulez’s "Structures pour deux pianos" using the Rubato software module BigBang developed by the third author, and the Escher theorem from mathematical gesture theory in music. This is both a textbook addressed to undergraduate and graduate students of music composition and improvisation, and also a state-of-the-art survey addressed to researchers in creativity studies and music technology. The book contains summaries and end-of-chapter questions, and the authors have used the book as the main reference to teach an undergraduate creativity studies program and also to teach composition. The text is supported throughout with musical score examples.

Abstract

Algorithmic composition – composing by means of formalizable methods – has a century old tradition not only in occidental music history. This is the first book to provide a detailed overview of prominent procedures of algorithmic composition in a pragmatic way rather than by treating formalizable aspects in single works. In addition to an historic overview, each chapter presents a specific class of algorithm in a compositional context by providing a general introduction to its development and theoretical basis and describes different musical applications. Each chapter outlines the strengths, weaknesses and possible aesthetical implications resulting from the application of the treated approaches. Topics covered are: markov models, generative grammars, transition networks, chaos and self-similarity, genetic algorithms, cellular automata, neural networks and artificial intelligence are covered. The comprehensive bibliography makes this work ideal for the musician and the researcher alike.
